Technically, Roadhouse is at the foot of a mountain leading out onto badlands. The drawbridge that blocks the surface entrance is solid gold.

Besides, you can't let the smelly elves see the awesome!
I don't even let them in. The elves park in a quartzite trading depot specially prepared for them.

By the way did you know Quartzite is magma-safe?

Burning and raping the land is recreational. Where business is concerned, though, sustainability is the name of the game.

I also 'accidentally' start grass fires every time the elves arrive. Sometimes it kills them, sometimes not.

It's always funny.

Loving the bonfire mod.

 :o  >:(  ???

Pretty awesome circular fort with magma falling in the center, I have to say, it looks good.  Plus you resisted the urge to dig out those gems and veins of gold or platinum or whatever on the room borders, which I have completely failed to do even after promising myself not to.

It completely upstages my fort built around a 100-z volcano pipe though.  Which is still draining after 5 years so I can build the central staircase in it.  I made speed:1 dwarves but didn't count on magma being so slow to pour out, and the magma pump stack I built to refill it obviously doesn't drain magma from near the pipe, so it's just sitting idle...

I guess I'll go gen a world in .18 now and try again.  Oh well.

Nice! I'm always a sucker for big, central, many-z-level shafts ending in magma.

As it says on the tin, that's a superior quality fortress.

Even better, 7-8 fps! It's a fair clip considering the population's over 300 and the animal count isn't far behind.

Do you have temperature turned off? That should drastically improve FPS.

Temperature is on, since all waste material is dumped into the magma pool. Notice the shafts leading down from the hospital level either side of the main walkway? Garbage disposal chutes. I don't think all the skulls and goblin corpses would dissolve if I turned it off.

I usually dig a chute straight down into the magma ocean for disposal of junk. If you drop something onto semi-molten rock, and there is magma on the semi-molten rock the object will instantly vanish from the game, just the same as if you chucked it into a chasm in 40D.

Curiously, if there is no magma on the semi-molten rock your dwarves will happily walk across it with no ill effects. It functions like regular ground in that case.

Turning temperature off will be a massive FPS boost, and if you rely on the semi-molten rock disposal method you can get rid of items without needing to worry about temperature at all.

This fort is awesome for so many reasons, not the least of which because it's named after a Patrick Swayze movie. I am inspired to build something like this now.

Think of it like Sim City, except with rival mayors that seek to destroy your citizens by arming legions of homeless people and sending them to attack you.
