Do cave spiders in caverns re-spawn? The cats killed all of them, and after a couple months I have noticed no more webs were appearing...

IIRC the spiders don't actually spin the webs, but the webs spawn when spiders are present nearby, and since they're not nearby if the cats are killing them....
Spiders are vermin and the game determines vermin populations as basically infinite, so you should in theory never run out of them.

In other words, drop the cats into the magma sea and the webs should come back.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Actually, cave spiders do spin webs, assuming they're actually present - back in 40d, you could see them blinking in and out of existence and spinning webs. In 0.31, it seems like the caverns are prefilled with spider webs but the spiders themselves are never actually present, at least in my forts...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I see them. They're not that common though .. I see more GCS than regular CS TBH.

I have never known cave spiders to come back after being rendered extinct by cats.  In my Game of Life megaproject fortress the local cave spider fortress was wiped out in a matter of months because I wasn't quick enough with killing off the cats some immigrants brought.  I ran that fortress for decades and never saw a single cage spider or web.

Vermin populations are not infinite, they can be killed off, just like wandering wild animals and fish can be hunted to extinction.

In other words: if you want silk you better catch a whole bunch of cave spiders real quick-like!
