Adventure on the High Seas

Is it possible to swim across the ocean? If so, what level of skill do you need? Do bogeymen attack? What sea creatures could be a threat?

people have done it in older versions.  Food and water are no longer an issue, but fatigue is.   now that fatigue is a concern, i'm not sure it will be possible over anything but fairly short distances.

Let's just say that falling unconscious while in 1 km-depth water is a Bad Idea.

you could do it if you stay close to an ice sheet to rest on during the day, and swim by night.

This thread just made me imagine owning a boat in adventure mode and traveling along the oceans killing giant sea monsters or pirates, or becoming said pirate and looting other boats while you pillage towns with your cannons.

oh my god this needs to happen.

It probably will...someday. But for now let's focus on actually riding horses while guarding caravans.

Toady just needs to code in some life jackets. And harpoon guns.

Is it difficult to swim very far even as a demigod? I'd think that with superhuman endurance etc. it would at least be conceivable that someone could cross an ocean.

Adventure modes been tweaked quite a bit, like we currently don't have to drink or eat but sleepy-tiredness is quite a factor. I guess your character's strength & endurance is still the major factors as well as swimming skill for long distance shore leave & hope you get a long nights sleep before trying to reach islands. And if your lucky, small pockets of frozen lands for resting & a journey that is shark free....

I did it with a character who's endurance was high and her swimming level was professional. The was a helluva lot of lag on my pc while trying to do it. There was about a 30 second freeze every 40 squares or so. It took about two Pixies albums and half of Kid A to reach the other side.

I did it the other day.

My character's attributes (limited to those I thought might have an effect on movement and fatigue)

- High Strength
- Maxed Out Agility
- High Toughness
- Above Average Endurance

I think I was a Competent level Swimmer when I first started. I specifically chose to start from a point where I'd have a resting place in the form of an island between me and my destination. I encountered no troubles in the form of wild life while at sea, the biggest risk came in the form of freezing temps, if the patch of water you're swimming in happens to freeze then you're a tasty Adventurercicle. So make sure that the temperature of the area you're trying to cross isn't cold and doesn't get cold. Late spring to mid-summer are most likely the best times to set out.

It is quite possible to cross even large bodies of water. You would need a lot of time to become very drowsy, so don't be afraid of drowning because of it. Instead your worry should indeed be overnight freezing, so try doing it in the summer or turn off the temperature. No more than novice swimmer is required, although better skills will make it faster.

Also you may consider crossing frozen seas during the winter, but be prepared for horrendous lag, as every time you enter a new 48x48 square, the game recounts its temperature and turns it into ice. Also, the ice is somewhat uneven - some 48x48 squares end up higher, so you'll have to go around them.

Funny thing is, this can create ice caverns and in some situations, ice fortresses, either only accesable to fliers.
