Hatch Covers
« on: November 22, 2010, 06:50:12 pm »

It seems after recieving my task to slay yet ANOTHER night creature, I venture out towards my goal. Upon arriving, I drop down into a hole with a hatch cover, it's open and I sneak into the beast's lair.
After seeing the beast have three eyes, he immediately spots me and I make a run for it towards the exit, attempting to lure him outside so I can reactivate my sneak in an attempt to get some hits on him. Unfortunately, the three-eyed beast didn't follow me outside for a battle.
He locked the hatch cover and sat down to watch some 80's sitcom, leaving me outside in the cold, at night.

*Sigh*
How do I open this thing? I've tried interracting it, stepping on it, throwing rocks at it. Sure, I could just say "screw it", but wouldn't that mean I still have a quest floating around in the map view to annoy me?

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.

Did you try setting fire near it?

i dont think doors and hatches can be locked in adventure mode.  those lair hatch covers are usually over ramps though, and it does mater what direction you approach the ramp from.

or perhaps the bottom of it is occupied, so you cant move up and down the ramp?

doors can be locked. I was walking through an abandoned fort and it asked me if i wanted to pick the lock, so i said yes.

But probably approaching it from different sides is the way to go, I doubt he locked it

^This. It is the only way I've been able to get into hatches sometimes.

Seriously?? I've never had a locked hatch... I feel left out.
Of course, you have to approach 'em from a certain direction, and there are 8 different directions, so make sure you try em all. :)

Yeah, but thats only when you leave a door locked in fortress mode and then return to the site.  I've never seen a locked door that wasnt from an abandoned fortress.  Likewise, the only traps and levers are your own.
