what does smoothed stone look like?
« on: November 22, 2010, 03:32:16 pm »

Smoothed stone seems to have no real description in game of what it looks like, it could be somewhat rough, but flat, it could be polished to a high shine, or it could be somewhat matte.
personally I like to think about it like it was polished to a high shine, however, I can't imagine the dwarves polishing stone that much, but then again the hammers and chisels and files don't work either... how does smoothed stone look, and how is it done?

A dwarf's beard is his chisel.

A dwarf's beard is his chisel.
thank you for answering exactly half of my questions.
I googled smoothed stone and found this
http://URL=http://www.nfglm.com/images/Smooth-Stone.jpg
which happens to refuse to load in the forum as an image.
but then again I found this highly relevant picture

That's because that's not an image URL, it's an image URL inside a regular URL. Can't imagine why. Maybe to discourage people from posting it on forums without hosting it somewhere else because of bandwidth issues. Although I guess that means I can imagine why.

In any case

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Polishing doesn't need to include crazy buffing or wax. Polishing hard materials like metal or stone can be accomplished by using a series of abrasive tools. Begin with rasp, work your way down to whatever the dwarves use for an emery cloth. This would leave the stone with a natural, smooth sheen. VERY dwarf-y. You've probably seen examples of this in public buildings, or banks, just imagine what that would look like without wax. This is the best example I could find of the resultant texture.

I imagine it's just getting rid of all of the outcroppings and dangerous spikes that quick mining leaves behind, because it goes pretty quickly and requires no tools. Engraving is how you get the super-polished and aesthetically pleasing designs.

So I think of it as looking like a large river stone texture that's been smoothed down, but not actually worked at all.

I've always thought of smooth stone as the sort of stone texture you get on stone paving infront of buildings etc, sort of like concrete, not shined up really well.

I always thought of it as smoothed stone. Like what you'd get if you just scraped something metal over stone until it was smooth.

It wouldn't be shiny, or glassy smooth, or even pleasant to the touch. It would just be straight and level and ready for engraving.

I always thought that it was so smooth that it becomes notably reflective, so much so that all walls are on a slight angle, rather then perfect 90 degree angles, as to reflect light throughout the fortress, thus your fortress is lit but rough cavern's aren't.

Your wrongness quotient is so high that it has wrapped the 8bit value around to negative and made you correct.

You think that's bad, you should have seen me at that anime convention.

Its the difference between building a classical Greek structure and a medieval European castle.

The Greeks used stone blocks, which were smoothed and very frequently engraved. The medieval Europeans used rough, unfinished stone chunks as part of their castles.
