When I think of blocks, I always envision them as being a collection of smaller blocks such as when a dwarf build a wall with a stone block it's actually more like brickwork (It's best not to think about what dwarfs use for mortar.)

Actually, a single unit of "blocks" in Dwarf Fortress consists of exactly two 8"x4"x2.5" bricks - the math (use weight and density to determine volume) actually works out quite well.
Why not more bricks of lesser dimensions?

Why would that matter? The volume is still the same...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

You made an irrational, emphatic statement that a unit of 'blocks' is EXACTLY 2 bricks. I was pointing out that you're making assumptions, and that it is far from exact.

So would a block, not equal 2 bricks?

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

I suppose it could, as a 'block' is an undefined unit which can make a floor, an entire wall, or a pump. My point was that he made an emphatic statement backed up by undisclosed math, and his statement was irrational.

There is no way the math could indicate that it is ONLY two bricks in a block, it could be more bricks each with correspondingly lesser dimensions and still come out to the same overall volume.
