Sanitizing the caverns
« on: November 22, 2010, 02:56:28 pm »

I've been looking for a way to remove all life from the caverns for a certain amount of time.
currrently I've been flooding them with fairly little effect. that is no doubt because water can drain many places. and of course the cave system is incredibly massive.
how do you do it? preferably without magma, as I have none as of now.

If I ever need to do it, I do it the boring, no-elegance-in-it way of walling a large part of it so I have all the space I want.  Usually I just overload the place with cage traps in a similarly inelegant way of trying to catch living animals.

Beyond clearing it with your military, the only way to really clear a section of the cavern is to wall it in.  If you took out the water at the edges, you could wall it in so that new creatures could only exist on the edge tile.

Stop flooding just start paving the cave with floor tiles. That should kill all the tower caps and underground plants. Turn kittens loose in there to hunt all the vermin.

Send soldiers patrolling through the cavern. Set traps near the edges.

Lots of traps near the entrance, turn off refuse hauling, and send several squads in there.

One quick note to those who wall in, Don't forget the ceiling! First time i walled in a part of the cavern for my farming, I ended up with flying forgotten beasts all over the fucking place. Needless to say, they proved to the be undoing of that fortress.

Its very easy to do. Create a burrow that covers the caverns. Assign a squad of dwarves to defend the burrow. A single squad of 10 dwarves would do it. Have 5 on, 5 off. Give them weapons and armor, and let them do their thing.

It takes a surprisingly short amount of time to do this. After a year or so you probably won't have any other creatures in the caverns aside from the occasional FB.

I spent a lot of time walling the caverns in and making it look pretty. :D it still isn't perfect though .. a cave crocodile crawled in from the water supply and into the prison. Could have gotten nasty if there hadn't been a pack of war dogs there.

High master metal crafter was imprisoned there due to lack of platinum in the mountain :(

Heres a fun way I found: link two layers of cavern with a trap hallway. It seems creatures aree rather likely to path to the other layer of cavern, and allways end storming to their death in the trap hallways.
