Game companies that pump out good games go under because if you focus on quality games over quantity of them sold(I.E how the standard gamer can't get enough of SHOOTY SHOTT LOLOOLOOLOLOL) you won't turn a large enough profit. Also you run out of ideas.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

That isn't exactly true.

It is that game buisness is a very risky one and your bound to have a bad game or undersold game somewhere. (It was one of the largest reasons Point and clicks went away. Not because there wasn't a market for them, but because you needed to sell soo many that it had to be a hit)

EA, that does make good games once in a while, has a HUGE cushion of successful mediocre games and that is why they arn't out of buisness.

Or basically: Games need a LOT of money

Or basically: Games Certain sorts of game development need a LOT of money

Fixed, more or less. We've kinda' seen it proven a dozen dozen times already that you don't need a multi-million dollar budget to produce a solid, fiscally viable gaming product. Re: Most games pre-PS2, various indie/small developer successes, etc, etc, etc. Maybe to make multi-millions in sales (though probably not quite so much in profit), but that really does not have anything to do with making games, just making a notable profit off them. Cutting overhead (read: Not going down the lawlgraphics path.) does a pretty good job of things, too.

Point on the risk, though. Game devs have more or less always known that, though, and it doesn't seem to be really stopping folks.

I'unno, I guess I just don't like seeing the 'hurrhurrgamesneedmondobucks' thing. For some reason, it incites the same emotive response I get when people say they have to speed to avoid getting run over by other people speeding. Too tired to figure out what it is, bleh.

Getting RICH off games needs a lot of money.  And hell, isn't that every dev's dream?  Don't just be successful, but actually become a project lead, or a head coder or designer, make the game that is a super-hit, or even run the company.  You lose a little bit of the heart of the industry there, but the soul still burns:  In the end it's people living the dream.  Can't fault 'em there.

I HOPE your not thinking of games that actually did require a lot of money but look so cheap you wouldn't assume so.

But yes as I've spoken to a developer before. There is more money in making cheap, barely worked on, games that people buy on mass then there is in huge releases.
