Game Companies You Miss
« on: November 22, 2010, 08:06:38 am »

So, what game companies do you guys miss, after they collapsed / got taken over / dissolved?

For me, the prime ones have to be Bullfrog (my arse are Lionhead spiritual successors to those guys), Black Isle and Creature Labs. The loss of those companies and all their talent (or at least their talent in a single company, they don't work as well split up) disappoints me greatly and is what I believe to be a major cause in the unoriginality of games these days.

Maxis, Bullfrog, Blue Byte, Westwood, LucasArts.

Yes, all of them still exist in a way, but not as I knew them.

A lot. Definitely Bullfrog and Black Isle, and more recently some others-- The new modern Castlevania looks... disappointing, taking the series toward God of War, for instance. So partially Konami, I'd suppose.

Clover, of God Hand, Okami and Viewtiful Joe. Not a huge console game player anymore but my god-- each is a work of art in its own way (and Okami is a work of art in the more usual sense).

Add: Also Maxis and Westwood. I wish there was a sequel to Nox. I liked Nox.

I'll throw in: Any decent developer that had any games released prior to 2005. Seriously, is it just me or do game development firms go up in smoke like they're illusions during a Vegas magic act? They certainly used to, if they don't still.

Origin

Even when they made games that were shit compared to their own standards, like Ultima 8, the ambition still shone through.

simply captivating

Well Enix was pretty great too...

To admit all the best Enix games I can think of were Tri-ace as well... (and some Squaresoft as well)

I'd say Quest, but apparently they're still around. Why they haven't produced a new Ogre Battle game since '99, I don't know and probably don't care, but they're due for it damnit.

Hudson Soft, I guess. Far East of Eden is apparently fairly awesome, or something. Couldn't tell due to moonspeak.

Neverland waaait a second. They're still around!? The guys who did Chaos Seed also did Rune Factory. My mind is blown.
