I shift back and forth based on my mood, I started out using Mayday's tileset as it came with the tutorial file for 40d back in the day, then I went a while using nothing but ASCII (though even then I often used a tileset that was the same symbols but square, never liked the rectangle thing), then I tried out some of the more popular ones (Phoebus, Ironhand, etc) and liked them, now I just sorta use whichever I'm in the mood for.

Cannot say any one style is better, both have their advantages and disadvantages.  My biggest problem with tilesets is how often the text gets screwed up, sometimes wi^h j#st a few lette]s here and there replaced but often with t@ns (f stu': replac+d to @he po%nt it! a p*in to r$ad.

Before 40d i was playing ASCII. Now i prefer tileset, mainly Phoebus but i just can play with Mayday or Ironhand. Depend on the first one to be updated...

I'll never play again in ASCII i think, mainly because it's not squared.

There's a default squared tileset, in addition to many downloadable ones.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Self promotion: I agree that most tilesets, while prettier than ASCII, are too busy. So I made and use my own, which is as simple as possible while still giving info about what each dwarf's profession is.

I've never used anything other than ASCII, and have no wish to. I've gotten to the point where I interpret all the information on the screen automatically.

That being said, I switched from the default tileset to the square one, and from that to "Kelora_16x16_diagonal".
It keeps the feel of the original with a minimum of neural remapping  :D

I switched mainly because I wanted smooth walls.
