Picks are dwarvy weapons. I play human.

FEAR MY SUPERIOR SIZE.

Fear my pick smashing against your face and tearing your brain.

Dwarven !!Science!! (the "!!" part comes from the magma I added after the combat)
humans with grand master fighter, dodger, shield user, armor user

Trial set 1:  no armor, steel shields, 10v10
4/10 halberdiers
10/10 miners
6/10 halberdiers
9/10 miners
9/10 miners
4/10 miners (1 missing left arm)

4-2 pickaxes!

Trial set 2:  no armor, steel shields, 16-person free-for-all:
I'll list who wins and who is the 2nd to last to die.

1st: miner
2nd: halberdier

1st: halberdier
2nd: miner

1st: miner
2nd: halberdier

2-1 pickaxes!

verdict:  pickaxes win, but not by as much as in Adamz's tests

Re: silver maul
I recently used a silver maul in a fight against a human bandit.  I hit almost every part of his body, bruising muscle and bone, and busting one lung.  I couldn't figure out why he wasn't dying, until I looked at his description and, sure enough, he was very fat.  The maul was bouncing off his lard.  Finally he suffocated.

The wiki says penetration isn't used for blunt attacks, just the contact area.  If that's still true for this version, mauls are no where near as good as warhammers despite their bigger size.

Iron is still equally bad for both weapons. Tried 1-on-1 dwarf against colossus with each, neither of them penetrated. Even an iron whip is better, though of course it doesn't get a kill, at least the dwarf survived perpetually.

I didn't increase any skills, and didn't have shields, so that there weren't as many 'lucky shots/blocks'.
All that is in my tests are the weapon's ability to kill, not the user's ability to block, dodge, score a lucky hit, (at least not nearly as much as a grand master fighter, who would have opportunity shots left&right).

All my weapons are steel, as per the original test.
@uzu
10v10 duel, right now, miners vs whips. How much armor, what kind of whips would you prefer? We're using steel picks.

If you're using steel for picks, silver is best for whips. My guess is whoever gets initiative is going to win the battle; picks because of severing, whips because of pain.

EDIT: Armor doesn't really matter because both weapons seem to ignore it.

Alright, humans, 10v10, no skills, steel picks vs silver whips, 5 spaces apart
Unarmored:
Trial 1: 1 Miner surviving
Trial 2: 5 Lashers surviving
Trial 3: 7 Miners surviving
Even much?
Armored (full bronze, no shields):
Trial 1: 5 Lashers surviving, (I gotta note, hindsight, every single one of them were on the ground and multiple reds/missings
Trial 2: 6 Miners surviving, (all on foot)
Trial 3: 8 Miners surviving, (6 on foot)
Armored (full steel, no shields):
Trial 1: 10 Lashers surviving
Trial 2: 9 Lashers surviving
Trial 3: 10 Lashers surviving
That, was quite the Coup de main they had in that last round.
Good bout, I must say, they're even. But, that is excluding possible alternate results with either an adamantite, or silver, pick, (whichever is it's ultimate material, if one scores better than steel w/ picks)

Got to look at who struck first in any of those matches. Whoever gets initiative pretty much dominates the battle between them.

I tried running axedwarf, pick and lasher vs a bronze colossus, Adept Fighter and Shield Use. The lasher in all cases could disable the colossus pretty quickly and survive, but even with best weapon, couldn't kill. The axe and pick needed steel to even get a good hit in, and only the pick dwarf got a kill.

So, what you're saying is,
if we combined our forces,
we could kill anything?  :o

adamantite, hands down, killed 10 in steel armor, but with both in adamantite armor, they only won w/7 w/ several serious injuries. I'll run two more trials, one for steel armor/adamantite picks, one for adamantite armor/adamantite picks, vs the same armor and silver whips.
Ad pick/steel armor vs Si whip/steel armor:
5 lashers surviving, 2 on ground
Ad pick/ad armor vs Si whip/ad armor:
9 lashers surviving, 4 on ground

I must say, whips are more devastating than I had thought previously.

I'm saying the quiver I'm storing a whip and an axe in should be holding a whip and a pick instead.

Is it just me, or do Mauls suck?  I beat on a night creature spouse for literally 10 minutes of real life time wielding a silver maul multigrasp.  My character had almost super-human strength.  I broke almost every bone in its body, and it just wouldn't die.  I eventually had to wield knives in order to slay it.  I later killed bandits with the same maul, and it seemed pretty good for disabling people, but again it too forever to it to actually kill.

I seem to recall a warhammer being more effective...

Mauls are garbage. Warhammers are better. Morningstars and flails are arguably better still. Picks are god. (though whips are fucking satanic)
