Landmine!
« on: November 20, 2010, 09:23:17 pm »

I was heading back to the city after slaying a hydra with my band of 19 brave warriors, when suddenly the game seemed to freeze. I waited for a while, moving only one square every twenty seconds, until I noticed a huge cloud growing from behind my field of vision. Curious, I took a step back, and the cloud continued growing in my direction.

Suddenly I got several screenfulls of "The Swordsman is caught in a cloud of boiling magma!", "The Spearman is caugt in a burst of red sand!" and my allies slamming into obstacles. I turned around and ran away as fast as I could, getting barely far enough before the cloud started dissipating in the cold air.

I returned to the origin point of the cloud, discovering a deep pit going straight down into the magma sea. Apparently water somehow reached the boiling rock through an underground cavern, violently erupting through the surface and sending even regular sand around like burning fallout.

After such a discovery of random awesomeness, I collected some screenshots to show the location:

You are one lucky guy. Not many people have a mini eruption happen underneath you.

Someone needs to make a drawing of you running away from the explotion. It most likely would be pretty epic.

What probably happened was that a murky pool spawned next to a volcano, creating obsidian that displaced magma at the bottom, which went up, and in addition to the natural magma regeneration, made the volcano overflow, melted through the ice, and caused more cave ins launching the molten rock up into the air. Just a !!theory!! :D

Awesome! Amazing you managed to outrun a violent cave-in like that.

Makes absolutely no sense though. What in dwarf fortress could possibly allow something like this to happen, especially in adventure mode? The best I can say is a naturally occuring magma piston+aquifer/cavern lake + some amount of material floating in the sky and falling at just the right moment or something.

Did you take a screenshot of the location in your travel map? You should embark on the area and perform a detailed survey.

I agree. Too bad dorfs don't have GPR.

I was messing around in arena mode just now and had something similar happen to me, except that the explosion happened downwards...(makes a bit of sense since it happened at the highest point and thus could not go up.). It appears to be caused by magma and water mixing and the steam not having enough room.

So steam bubbles then?

Holy s***.

Thats about all that comes to mind for that
The ground just detonating beneath you, and barely escaping its blast.

Im thinking it could be a steam buildup of some kind from magma and water, but even then thats a big explosion -- Not as big as you can orchestrate in Fortress mode of course, but this is Adv Mode, and this is rare!

Survey the area, hell, record it and make a video series about excavating the area;
Retire your adventurer and use Fortress mode to dig scaffolds down it, switch back to Adv mode and explore
Whatever it takes, this must be investigated to find the source!

And if a video series was made im pretty sure we'd all watch it...
But thats unnecessary

I experimented a bit more in arena and it looks like, at least in arena mode, it only happens when a large amount of concentrated steam hits the top of the map, the sides won't work. If you would like to replicate this just build a ring of rock walls on the outer edge of the top of the pyramid thing and unpause, I also achieved the same effect with a rock tower(with a roof) that only went up to the 3rd z-level...

My best guess for what happened is that, in this case, a large amount of water and magma mixed around an otherwise open area just as the map loaded, although I'm basing this off of stuff that happened in arena mode so I might be entirely wrong.

Optionally, an underground stream leading to an oddly genned pit of magma - The steam has nowere to go, builds up over time, and exploded.

This all implies steam has some kind of pressure though which I didn't think was the case.

No, steam has no pressure and liquid "teleports", and there are other weird stuff like that.

Notice that it happened on glacier. I saw something like this later. Let me investigate.

Okay, I can't find it now, I could try to find it later though. A person reported "chunks of land" shooting up into the air when he travelled glacier. It had something to do with caveins when parts of glacier melt (and glaciers already have "breaks" and caves because they are generated strangely) and breaking of the said cave ins into underground magma lakes which made magma to teleport/shoot up.

P.S. Got it!
