So, halfway between melee weapon and ranged weapon. Singular, retrievable, but also ranged. I think, because of the way DF ranged combat works, that thrown weapons may have a very high hit rate because at ~5 tile range the enemy won't have a chance to move out of the way before the shot strikes home.

On the other hand, they're likely to be fairly useless. It'll be like hitting someone once with a spear (for javelins and the like). Now, in the real world, hitting someone with a spear is fantastic because they're probably not drawing breath, but in DF, where having things sticking out of you doesn't hinder your ability to fight at all and opponents only go down once you've emptied all 412 pints of blood onto the floor, they might not be of much use.

You'll get the occasional lucky shot, but unless this suggestion is combined with the morale ideas bouncing around or equipment damage, thrown weapons are going to be about as much use as a one armed peasant facing off against a GCS.

Heh, well, or things sticking out of you after being hurled with enough force to bypass your armor and pierce major body parts could do a lot more than it does now... that'd make it useful too, no? ;-)
Right now, I'm not entirely sure what taking damage really DOES. I can hew into someone with my +bronze halberd+ and have him appear to be barely bleeding, or lop off several limbs without them going unconscious from the pain. Which is the major reason I generally just go for aimed shots when I get good enough. I've headshotted more peasants than I can count.

I've noticed that dwarves charge a lot, which means that they start headshotting with every attack. I have no fewer than 7 decapitated trogs sitting outside my quarantined zone, where the military live.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

If Javelins were in, my entire army would be based on getting up close to the enemy and throwing a Javelin in the face.

Hmmm, if throwing weapons are implemented, I suggest as a balance issue, they have to have one hand free. So no shield, and weapon, or a shield, and wrestling, or two throwing weapons, and wrestling, so on. It's not exactly realistic, but I think, if you took the time, to throw something, you'd lose a bit of the momentum you gained, by taking time to draw a shield, or pull out your sword. Mostly though, it's just so you wouldn't have to nerf throwing weapons, to balance it, and you could represent there damage fairly, and accurately. On a semi-related note, they should probably use the same throwing weapon forever picking it up, when the fight is over, so we don't have to make twenty javelins for each dwarf. With, possibly a ranged unit, that has some special case, and only uses thrown weapons, as an exception.

Having an "Off-hand" slot, with the option to assign a shield, atlatl (if implemented) or light weapon may be an option. But I'd rather allow some kind of sheath/baldrick item that allows dwarves to carry other weapons, much like a quiver lets them carry bolts. Perhaps allow bucklers to be carried on it as well, since I never use bucklers as-is.

Implementing off-hand mechanics would also be good for balancing large, two-handed weaponry if it isn't already.

In adventure, you can just collect spears and decide they are throwing spears.

Or maybe there's a god who's just completely insane and sends you to Detroit, Michigan in a new body if you ever utter the name "Pat Sajak".

Which is crazy! Spears are weighted all wrong. Silly adventurers.

Unfortunately, because they're pretty heavy, thrown spears are actually like horrible, gigantic arrows of impalement and death.

*ON-topic*: I like shield carrying stuff. although we could actually let bucklers carry light throwing weapons, and not sheilds. yeah, they have little use now...

Being a Frank (not French) myself, I support this idea :)
But i can't imagine throwing weapons were very effective in the aera DF is resembling. I would allocate them as weapons of (animal people or kobold) tribes and maybe humans.

How so?  And what do you mean by "the area DF is resembling?"  :3  As a Frank, you might be interested in this handy little throwing weapon used right before engaging in melee combat.  This kind of tactic was used for centuries, whether it was an axe, hurlbat, sling, arrow, javelin, or, in the case of the Romans, pilum.  I'd say it would be more than appropriate for whatever area DF is resembling, and whatever army/warrior/whatever in the game regardless of civ or tech.  I mean, check out the Bayeux Tapestry; there's javelins being thrown everywhere, and possibly even a mace!

This contains some pretty good examples.

You probably don't want to be hit by one either way.

Think of it like throwing a knife. A Throwing knife is leagues better then a knife... You don't want to be dodging knives either.
