Alright, first real big post here. Hope I don't make a total ass of myself.

So, I've always had this thing where I hate sending my Marksdwarfs off alone to go a pin-cushioning everything in sight, mostly because of the few times that they've been ambushed from behind by Elves. Typically I send a squad or two of Melee based armored tanks along, for kicks.

What I'd love to do though, is have heavily armored Marksdwarfs who carry axes and hammers along for the ride, they shoot the enemy full of bolts and then draw hand weapons when they run out of ammo. I just don't think that smacking elves with crossbows is...dwarfy...enough for my military. They deserve a good cleaving.

Sadly I can't do this right now, or just don't know how.

Thoughts on the matter?

That isn't possible as far as I know, since dwarves only will carry one weapon.

I hear that Silver or Steel Crossbows aren't bad melee weapons if your dwarves are trained in hammers.

I think I read something about the new release for secondary weapons
might just be for adventure mode, however, let me check

I'm unsure if this means fortress mode dwarves are able to carry secondary weapons or what, but I wouldn't count on it

I had daggers laying around from kobold thieves .. i figured i could issue them to marksdwarves but nope.

I swear I've been able to assign secondary weapons to my stunties, but it might just be a fluke of the mod I'm using.

If it wasn't, and if he seriously was dual-wielding spears while wearing a shield, I would be very excited.

Alas, if only DF had handheld smaller crossbows for such a purpose.

But then again, that'd probably lead to an increase in crossbow related deaths and noble *Accidents*.

Hey guys! I tried the dagger + crossbow thing again in fortress mode. The dwarves CAN equip them, but any combination of crossbow and dagger (regardless of which hands they hold it in and if shields are present or not) results in the dwarf using his shield and completely ignoring the crossbow.

 They favor melee weapons.

Now, if only I could make them throw axes at the foes, and I could completely disregard crossbows in favor of Axe chucking armored warriors...

Throwing weapons would be awesome.  Carry less, but higher and more varieties of damage compared to bolts.
