Seriously though, that's probably the legitimately best artifact I've ever seen. Steel shield with spikes of bone, engraved with an image of the god of darkness?

Well, if you stash it in a heavy bin (lead or rock or something) you can go find it again as an adventurer when your fortress crumbles.
Otherwise, assign it to some soldier you like.

I think he got tired of usual GCS and dragon leather clothes, adamantine cloaks and steel thongs he usually had.

This actually happened to me. "This is a donkey bone scepter. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality". Pretty bummed that bone artifacts are still bummed.

I got a billion shoe with spikes of star ruby and an image of cheese in onyx.

The good part is that I can have a soldier wear it. He has one pretty metal shoe.

I haven't quite figured out 2010 military yet. Can soldiers of any rank use artifacts now?
