First you open andrews as a way of apologizing. It is the encyclopedia of beasts. Beasts like the sewer beast that your dad  killed earlier are genetic monstrousitys left behind by the first martian invasion. Since the beasts are so numerous and vary so much the book only contains infomation on the most common breeds and the most famous and dangerous ones.

Lucy explains it's not a puzzle but rather a toolbox-in-a-screwdriver. A rather unimaginatively named screwdriver that can change it's shape to most types of tool.
