What is it you enjoy about Adventure Mode? (Take II)
« on: November 19, 2010, 04:34:26 pm »

Before the glorious events of 31.17 and 31.18, I started a thread in which I wrote, in part:

I've played a bunch of Fortress Mode, and I've played some Adventure Mode, and I've gotten to wondering.  Lots of folks on this forum like both, but some will say that they only play Adventure Mode.  To you I ask: what do you do in it?

As far as I can tell, there are only three things to do:

1.  Revisit your old fortress(es).  But for that, you have to like Fortress Mode enough to make some.
2.  Do quests.  But for that, you have to have a world generated where you can find quest-givers, or even people.
3.  Pursue a user-defined goal.  And the only goal I have heard so far is genocide.

Now, the problems with 2 have been fixed, and there is much more to kill, in terms of Ñ's, ñ's, and bandits.  So, now what is it that attracts you to Adventure Mode?

Have the updates changed your approach?  Is anyone still trying to commit genocide?  From this thread, it sounds more complicated than before.  Has anyone managed to commit genocide for every night creature in the world yet?  Toady One has said that this one, at least, is possible.  Do you have any new goals heretofore unseen?

I was attracted to the idea of a very violent world where I could die in one hit. I started adventuring in 31.17 and this was my first contact with dwarf fortress, as fortress mode was just too complex for me (but thanks to adventure mode I think that might change a little bit.)
But then I found a large world complete with warring factions and merciless fiends that require defeating. I came to enjoy every little bit of adventure mode, like throwing a pick in a troll's face and having it shred the brain from the head in spectacular (textacular) gore. Or getting my adventurers every limb ripped off by wolves. And then I discovered the history of my world and I jizzed in my pants.

I love how I have an affect on the world and I can visibly see myself becoming a skilled warrior ingame. Ooh and I like how brutal the combat is.

I like how in adventurer mode you have to take care of your char, your character is important and candie or become seriously handicapee and you can't go back on your decisions.

Watching a minotaur with an exceptional bronze pick wade into my ten companions leaving them in a pool of blood and limbs only to have his head hacked off by my adventurer. But before his death, every single hit he landed severed a limb or gored a brain <shivers>... in the end only two of my companions survived, both missing a leg, all I can say is that I've never been made so happy by a game before.

Two Words: Aimed Attacks

There is nothing quite as satisfying as precision decapitations or stabbing a guy through the chest. Adventure Mode not only lets you pick a fighting style, it lets you choose how you use your skills.

There's all kinds of ways to murder things now. I like playing as a "monk"-type character, with all of my skill points in wrestling/punching/kicking/dodging/fighting. Works great against bogeymen, but ambushing bandit leaders keep killing me.

It'll be even better once the martial arts/fighting styles stuff that's been mentioned in the Talks and the FotF thread gets worked on.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Aimed Attacks diffently attract me, I love the idea of duel wielding and stabbing with one sword and you slit there throat with your knife...

Alright.  I think a picture is becoming clear.  The picture is painted on once-living flesh stretched across a frame of gore-dripping bone, rendered in the medium of organs and ichor.

Heh... I like aimed attacks too, of course, but I really like... Just... Quests. Doing quests, becoming world-renowned and the occasional new dialouge option thing I discover.
Also I like imagining how my characters act etc., and writing the occasional story of their adventures. :)

Fuck, some of my heroes make Cthulhu and his brethren look like tea-totalers.
I love just walking into sleeping villages and slaughtering all the inhabitants without them ever waking up...
Gets my stats up as well.
