Dwarf Fortress would lose some of it's charm if it were taken out of ascii. Realizing that there's arms and legs and dwarf chunks lying all over the place is awesome in ascii, but would be visceral and disgusting in modern-day 3D graphics. I'm rather certain that I'd be completely turned off by that. Watching the dwarves march around nude (Armok-forbid) caked in blood and vomit and grunge, missing a hand or a lung, well... that would be a bit too much.
