Is this possible?
« on: November 19, 2010, 09:17:37 am »

I would like a material that would burn/vaporise anything it comes into contact with (other than my dwarves of course). Flavour wise, a sword made from a fragment of a star.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Its easy to create something that burns anything, all you have to do is increased the fixed temperature of the material that you are making it out of. However to create something that burns anything but your dwarves the only real ways are modding dwarves to be able to ignore the intense heats that the material would create or to fashion another material that could and make gloves out of it or something.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

They probably will as the material will probably incinerate them otherwise. I don't think it's possible to make a material only give off the extreme heat once its forged, even when its raw it'll be at that high temperature.

You should probably give everyone those gloves just to be safe, or forbid the stuff so random jobs don't select it and burn up your dorfs.

I don't think it will unless they touch it. I don't believe the act of mining it counts as touching it, but don't quote me on this one.
I'm not sure if you can make a METAL with a high fixedtemp and make the actual STONE have a low one.

I was gonna alloy the non hot metal with junk stone to make the hot metal. That works. But then my only damn non gloved dwarf thought it would be !!Fun!! To carry it to the stockpile.  Needless to say. He didn't get far.

This is good. I approve.

I also like the idea of mass-producing aspestos gloves and distributing them through the fortress. And of having stubborn dwarves that won't wear them bursting into flame.

And, for that matter, impertinent adventurers that wander in and try to steal one without bothering to read the engravings of dwarves bursting into flame all over the place and ignoring the perfectly intact gloves on many of the charred skeletons.
