Pulling out stuck projectiles causes pain and bleeding, speeding up the pass out process ususally. Just a note.

And, I do believe that companions can increase their skills in combat, like other people.

Basic Tactics: When faced by numerous enemies, never put yourself in a position where multiple can attack you. This means dealing with marksmen first, then dipping around your enemies only stopping to strike when there's only one adjacent. If you [A]ttack and can target multiple enemies, you're doing it wrong.

Example
: out exploring the wilderness trying to find new civilizations, my companions got ganked by a kobold ambush. I was about five days' travel from the nearest town, and night was setting in. Naturally, every night saw a new pack of bogeymen after my delicious flesh. How did I survive? Tactics! I ran away until only one was adjacent, then turned and charged him. Then I stepped back and let another come at me before charging him. I didn't go for followup shots--not when other bogeymen were near. And I didn't stick around the prone bogeymen when their allies; even a dying man can be dangerous.

Sleep
: Not just for the weak anymore! If you're drowsy, you're gonna fight like shit. And kobolds love to pick on drowsy marks. If you've got companions to watch your back, sleep as soon as you notice you're drowsy. This way you won't be drowsy by the time the ambush comes. And if the ambush doesn't come, it's not like you lost anything by sleeping.

Skills
: Swimming is valuable, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. While it's easy to raise all of your offensive and defensive skills, it's comparatively difficult to raise swimming and you need to be Adequate in it before you can swim in a murky pool without fear of drowning. So you might as well spend the 11 points at character generation to get there and save yourself a lot of worry.

Speculative
*: Observation is also a good skill to invest some points in for those who don't like to be woken up with bolts and arrows. You can raise this by getting ambushed, but it's really a good idea to start off with Novice Observation to keep yourself alive while you train it. I've currently got Adequate Observation (having started a Novice), and I've never been attacked before I could wake up.

*As in, "purely from personal observation." I could be wrong.

I used the fusion tool to peek at my companions and they definitely do increase their skills with use.

I can confirm this. I had a Maceman who lost his weapon and eventually changed to a Wrestler.

Wrestling is your most important friend.

Use it to quickly and easily disarm an enemy, or make a very quick kill - it seems any chokehold will cause any enemy that needs to breath (Oddly enough, not Night Creatures) to pass out in just 2 to 4 rounds, leaving them completely open for throat slitting or disabling strikes.  Use this to your advantage during large melees.  Weave around causing very quick pass outs, or stealing weapons from enemies, which can make great ammo for throwing.

I can confirm this. I had a Maceman who lost his weapon and eventually changed to a Wrestler.

if anyone is trained in any combat skills and they lose there weapon they seem to automatically become a wrestler...but as long as the person has the [CAN_LEARN] tag (any human, elf, or dwarf does) then they should become better just like you...Only way I can think of confirming this is finding a way to babysit someone to become a champion which will get them to start blinking I believe...wish there was a way to tell...

As for wrestling...as long as you dont get hit while messing with em they are pretty much your play thing...I try and take there weapon from them from the start (or break arms or legs) and they are gimped hard core

A companion's title is definitely about skills, not equipment. A Bowman companion of mine ran out of ammo and started hitting things with his bow. He stayed a Bowman for a while. Eventually he became a Wrestler, still using his bow as his primary melee weapon like he was before.

Using DfFusion, I have also learned that while companions can have great stats to start out with, they have no combat skills at all. I think that is why certain companion types are useless, this is why bowmen suck because they have no hope of hitting anything or improving their skills (since they only have approx. ~ 30 arrows/bolts to practice with). This is also why pikemen die so easily. They have no shield and no hope of ever parrying attacks.

Damnit, I wish you weren't so right about chipped bones. A shitty bandit archer got a hit on me and chipped my shoulder blade, after I ran away I passed out, he unloaded his whole quiver on me and then proceeded to bash me in the head with his bow ineffectively for about 20 turns. Then, out of nowhere he forced my brain through my 5 cloaks and my several helmets.

Darn you! I fended off wolves off by myself (not a SCRATCH) and i die with a SINGLE hit from a bandit ._.

edit: I was on 0.31.17 since i didn't have 18 running... so I guess that's why :P

Thats DF combat for ya! ive always thought it to be strange that you lose your headgear before the attack even happens though =P

My character recently had two ridiculously lucky close calls. In one case he dodged into a wall, got stunned, and then got attacked 4 times by a pikeman. Two shots were blocked, and two were stopped by chainmail. The other close call was against a god-tier bandit leader. A direct shot with his superior quality halberd to the head. It miraculously bounced off my character's helm. I think it's the only time I've ever seen a strong blow deflected by a helm. I just keep wondering when his luck will run out...

When he stops sacrificing bandits to Armok maybe?

Well, thats it for this lesson, we'll have more tips on our next session and as an assignment, I'd like everyone to gather the teeth of all the mammals that's you've beaten up in 24 hours...DISMISSED!

Haha, I do this already. My current adventurer has quite a collection. Sometimes I'll even take an opportunity attack in a serious melee to kick out a tooth or two. They make for nice lightweight trophies!

Oh, and I agree with the OP: Totally love Agility!
