Magma falls don't make "mist"
« on: June 13, 2008, 05:56:00 pm »

I built a lava fall inside my fort, and noticed that it doesn't produce any mist! Since caveins into lava generate mist, shouldn't falling lava also do this, at least, if it falls into more lava?

no, i don't think they should produce Mist, nothing is really happening to warrant mist.

Frothy magma from a magma fall would produce sprays of fiery sparks, so there should be "lava mist", and it should give an unhappy thought of "Urist was recently saying: AHHH MY EYES ARE ON FIRE RIGHT NOW!"

I don't think magma would froth when pouring down, I think it would just ooze. Of course, the sheer heat, combined with toxic gases from the lava would still kill any dwarves nearby.

I can't seriously believe that the OP could ever have thought that magma should produce mist. That's just... stupid.

Moving into a suggestion, but it should produce Ash, however, that coats the inside of your Fortress like snow and tastes terrible. I've lived through a couple of ash storms in my life, and believe me, they can certainly generate some unhappy thoughts. Said Ash can then of course be used to fertilise your crops (or, if you're smart enough, you could have your crops as close to your magma-falls as is sane, so they become self-fertilising)

Lava DOES create "mist;" it just doesn't occur in the same way as water. If you drop a structure in lava, it'll create yellow "lava mist" that supposedly burninates things (which I did, in fact, see myself yesterday). I don't think having a lavafall will create lava mist, though.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Exactly. That's the "mist" I'm talking about. If you're going to have lava fall several floors into more lava, you should get the same sort of results as dropping a rock wall the same way, no?

Thank you! I am now going to line my entrance hall with pools of magma with supports above them. When invaders arrive- BURNINATE WITH MAGMAMIST!

Actually, if lava were to fall like that, it would likely cool so much during the fall that it would land like a rock. Really, small amounts of magma falling like that should create stone below.

At the beginning of the video you most definitely see splattering, but you also see lava falling into water ... plop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scGvM_VoPwk&feature=related

I don't think Lavafalls are really "falling", though. Oozing would be a better word. That doesn't create mist or splatters, beyond what boiling lava gives you naturally.

A common misconception about lava is that it's as runny as other liquids like water or lemonade or children's tears.

Try instead to think of lava as a sort of a thick, lethal pudding.

I had some of that once. Opened the fridge and it tried to grab me.
