Make moody dwarves able to build their own workshop
« on: November 16, 2010, 03:49:01 pm »

That is, if I have an unbuilt workshop, and the moody dwarf needs it, let him qualify as being able to make that workshop.

Otherwise I have to pick, say, my bonecarver, order him to stop carving bones and start building a leather workshop, and then tell him never to do anything leathery again.

I see many possible problems with this. What if say, you're jeweler got a mood, and went to build a workshop, and I think jewelers one has a line on the left thats unpassable, he builds it in a hall, you don't pay attention, now he either, one has claimed a work shop, potentially blocking off himself from the supplies he needs stuck forever until insanity, or blocking off your dwarfs from supplies they need like say, your food stockpile, or worse yet, both. Causing half your fortress to go insane, and causing a massive crumble of society. I know I'm over thinking it a little bit, but I think this problem should be figured out before we implement any feature like this.

there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.

Er.. I think you're assuming that the dwarf is supposed to automatically construct the workshop? I believe shadow_archmagi meant that he'd place a workshop himself and the moody dwarf would be able to construct it, instead of just wandering around at the dining room.

No, it's suggesting that if Dwarf A is mooded, and there is a suitable, unbuilt workshop that requires Dwarf A's mooded skill to be built, then Dwarf A should be able to build said workshop.

Okay. I assumed he meant what I basically explained. That could work.

Just because restatement is the foundation on which our society is built:

Say I have a moody metalsmith.
Say I have a forge that I designated, but that hasn't been built yet.
The forge is sitting there flashing "NEEDS METALSMITHING"
The moodsmith is sitting there flashing "NEEDS FORGE"

These two should be brought together.

Wait til you get a moody glass maker and no glass furnaces. You have to build two. One for the moody dwarf and one to fetch sand and make glass blocks.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

This is an artefact adamantine floor. It menaces with spikes of native gold. It also blocks your only well.

Yep, I can see the potential... :-)
