Ahem,
Doing some research !!Science!!, 10v10 dwarfs, 5 paces apart, with steel picks vs steel halberds and no skill, (can't give them skill for mining, so it wouldn't be fair). I allow 20 seconds irl after the battle for dwarves to bleed out.

I found a well-crafted shirt of iron mail with, among other things, a well-designed image of 'Elven stupidity' on it. Definitely a keeper.

I've found nothing but garbage in lairs and camps. Maybe the coolest things I found were copper boning and carving knives in a night beast's lair, but that was because I picked them up and threw them at her as a means of saying 'hi'. The carving knife got her in the leg and severed an artery, making it an easier fight.

I found a human fortress made exclusively from Pitchblende. Doesn't quite count as "loot", but on the otherhand, it was a purple castle. Maybe I looted some 'shrooms without realizing it.

The quantity/quality of loot you find in lairs seems to be very much based on the amount of kills they have, as dead adventure gear will still be inside. Night creatures with no kills will often have no loot besides said forks and knives and normally a quern with various insect blood. Bandits tend to always have some loot for me but again I think it depends on the amount of bandits you fight. Seems to be a risk/reward system in the game from what I can tell.

Are you looking at the bag/chest by using the look command, as often the loot is inside that which you can't see without selecting it?

Yup, and paging down. A lot of it's low value vendor trash. The captains sometimes have something worth keeping, but not that much better than I can find at random in shops. I found a night creature who had the butchered remains of two dwarves in her lair, but none of their gear was around. Since last post, the best I've ever found are gold coins from a variety of civs, and at least some wearable clothes.

I encountered an 'extremely muscular' master leading a bandit group who only had two items in his inventory: a masterwork flail... and a loincloth! I figured this guy was going to put the hurt on everyone, but in practice one of my companions weilding a crossbow shot him straight off the bat, crippling his spine and making him drop the flail instantly. he got his head kicked off soon after and the flail is now busting orc skulls up and down the land

I killed a crone who bragged about killing a king, among others. He should've come geared for battle, right? There's his skull, there's his kidneys and a big cauldron of his blood...so where's the loot? Did you eat it and just butcher the body for decoration?

Tiger Iron is a gemstone, that is a large cut gemstone.  It is a trade good.

Exerpt from townbrush.txt by Internet Kraken:

"Nobody wants to live in Townbrush, and for good reason. Almost everyone that has come to Townbrush has been eaten, stabbed, crushed, drowned, hacked, incinerated, or beaten to death with an octopre skin backpack. When we're not under siege, we're being attacked by Forgotten Beasts. And when we're not being attacked by Forgotten Beasts, there's probably a zombie whale crushing someone to death in the dining room."

so it is. its amazing when you've been playing the game for years and new things sneak in between versions without being noticed.  and now i've learned another interesting geological tidbit.  never knew that the asbestos based tigers-eye could form with hematite to become tiger-iron.  amazing stuff.
