Dunno. Either it's randomly assigned to ambushers, or has been placed in one of the lairs. Given how many lairs and sites there could be...yeah. I think people assume once they max out their fame, they should start seeing the good stuff. And I think it's more that's just the point where you're able to go hunt down the good stuff.

It's also entirely likely people are getting items from reclaimed forts.

Well-crafted halberd. If only I realized in time that my adventurer was too short to wield the thing one-handed without penalty...

Found an inconspicuous looking rope reed fibre bag after a assult on a bandit camp. On closer inspection this bag had thread made out of emerald (not even sure how that works?) and and had an image of a bin in yellow diamond. That bags owner must have been a seriously rich bandit ;)

I'm pretty sure it was just a bag dyed emerald.

A steel hammer that I found embedded in my chest... repeatedly...
Even worse, I managed to take out one dwarf and take his steel spear, but proceeded to get ripped to pieces by the rest of the group, should have run away and let my peasant cohorts take the fall.

Quests to kill dwarves have moved to the top of my list of difficulty, won't be trying one of those without being well-equipped again...

elves < night creature spouses < humans < night creatures < dwarves

Oddly enough, I haven't encountered any gobbos yet with any of my adventurers, so I'm not sure where they go on the scale.

A side question, do dwarves have any shops?  In other words can you buy steel equipment anywhere or do you just have to take it from dwarves more ... directly?

Humans are still the only ones with shops.

My best loot would have to be toad paste, unique(as so far, never found another paste), and tasty!

Did you know that if you write 3.14 on a piece of paper and hold it in a mirror, it will say pie? And if you divide 42 by 3.14... you get 13.37!

It is incredibly satisfying to kill a man with a butterfly.

I found a human fortress made exclusively from Pitchblende. Doesn't quite count as "loot", but on the otherhand, it was a purple castle. Maybe I looted some 'shrooms without realizing it.

Seriously, what am I doing wrong right, I never find armor above bronze-level that fit my adventurer. I usually end up finding a few steel or iron shields, and a nice weapon that is not the kind I am skilled in.
Ditto, i've found at least a dozen quality steel spears, yet I'm a swordsman.

WTF BARBEQUE! You found Adamantine Armour? From a Fort, or actually a random drop?

I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

You gain no weapon experience for killing unconscious enemies, afaik.

I just found a Swordmaster wielding a Masterful iron sword with an entire suit of Masterful silk clothing. I think I'll let my men attack first.

Damn ninjas.

Maybe you were tripping on toad paste?

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

I found animal fortresses in genesis not sure if this is normal but it's pretty cool, figured the fortresses were abandonned and crazy animals made a jungle in it

Damn ninjas.

I encountered a goblin squad leader, he had a masterful iron maul and most of his clothes were master quality.

Every time he attacked his maul always landed but thankfully he was only able to bruise a few limbs.
