Having a baby dragon like me and fight for me. Good gods, that'd be awesome. But I'd need to keep enough meat and water on me at all times. Not to mention fuel to douse my opponents in.

A grand use for alcohol, I say. It should be in the crafting menu; Cooked Elf.

Requires: x1 Barrel of Alcohol, x1 Elf and x1 Dragon.

Ach, the old Pickled Elf Flambé! My mom used to make that for me when I was a lad!

What you do is you shove that elf in the barrel, nice and tight mind so he don't wiggle out, then add minced sun berries and plump helmets for seasoning and seal up the top. Bury it for a full month in hard-packed soil. This works best with rum, but any alcohol will do in a pinch. After the month is done, dig up the barrel and set it out on a flat stone area and have your dragon flame it good. Let the fire burn itself out, and the pickled elf will be nice and done! Crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside!

What is the difference between SDL and Legacy downloads?
Legacy = Old and Busted
SDL = New hotness

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

The SDL version basically makes your graphics card do most of the work in displaying the game, and it adds a few features such as being able to resize the window while the game is running, but it doesn't work properly on all systems.  The legacy version is there for if you can't run the SDL version.

If anyone could answer, why is the game so slow now? I used to be able to run 8x8 no problem but now I get less than 1fps. Even after the DF2010 update I think I still could play acceptably on 6x6. Is the OpenGL version jsut very inefficient right now?

The maps are much deeper due to the new caverns.  Your 8x8 map contains maybe 5 to 10x as many tiles as before.  Also, the depth depends on what kind of world you generate.  Large worlds are much deeper than small worlds.

True, its not unusual for maps to reach 150 or 200 z levels below the surface.

can DFhack drop some water in dining room to bathe them, then dfcleanmap to delete what washed off them.
Or designate a bath-pond, fill with buckets, make it the only meeting area or the entrance.

So for the past month I haven't played Dwarf Fortress because I've been messing around with my new computer and learning Linux. I had it working a couple weeks ago, but it wouldn't save genned world...probably because I didn't give it write permission. Anyways, now I'm having trouble getting DF to run...How do I start it? I click the DF icon after untarring it and nothing happens. I have all the required stuff so...

Edit: Fixed, I'm an idiot.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.

I don't think fuel is really that necessary.

If you consult your .DAT files, you'll find there is no dwarf word for "necessary" ;)

That quote would have been so epic except... DF doesn't use .DAT files. This isn't a modern game, my friend, it is a dwarfy one. And that's what matters.

Surely you don't mean to suggest that .DAT files are modern?

Would you believe the DAT and RAW keys are right next to each other?
