The fall of Enerenna Lucogthinna
« on: November 16, 2010, 07:03:12 am »

Enerenna turned to lay on her back. This way, she could see the moon glowing through the clouds. From this angle, the falling snow looked like a tunnel, as if the moon was looking only at her. Perhaps she was.
The first snow had just started when she felt the urge, at the beggining of winter. She couldn't describe it with another word : the urge. One day, she suddenly felt she needed to get a sword, and fix the world. In the summer, a hero had risen in the south, on the other side of the mountains, as suddenly as she did, and she chose his weapon : a two-handed sword.
Perhaps his ghost had whispered at her, using her to keep on fighting darkness. Perhaps they were both possessed by some god and he had felt the urge too.

It was peaceful now, except for the noises of the battle under the ground, a few feets away. She turned her head and looked at her right shoulder. She had an arm there, before, but Lasut Blossomfur the Competitive Control the Hydra ripped it off. It was only, what ? ten days ago ? It felt like a long time. Perhaps because she could not count that many days on her fingers now.
When the hydra took her arm, here first reflex was to back away. Her companions protected her retreat while she clunged to her shoudler. Once she had stopped bleeding, she did what she felt was necessary : she dropped her shield, went to the hydra, picked up her sword in her left hand and proceeded to cut off one of the hydra's head.
They called her a legend after that, Enerenna Lucogthina, "Glimmertalked the Bulbous Bride", which sounded much better than her first name "Nubpo".

It wasn't that much of a loss anyway. Her arm. She had ripped off a wing of a mountain titan with her bare teeth when the latter tried to escape flying, then cut the other with her sword. And they had fought 5 or 6 goblin ambushes while coming here, so it wasn't all that bad.

Perhaps if she still had a shield, she wouldn't be in this situation. They went here to fight a dragon ; they had already slain one, the one who had killed the only son of her lady, and she had already lost her arm back then. Tough luck this time.

The dragon jumped on her the very second she entered the cave. No yelling, no firebreath. It jumped on her, took her between its jaws, and snapped here in two. Then it threw her away as one of her latest companions had his spear enter the dragon's arm.

But it was already too late. She crawled out, under the falling snow, and laid back. She should have felt pain, but she didn't. Fear too, but she felt none either.
The dragon firebreath escaped the cave, a column of light in the night, setting a nearby tree on fire. She hoped her friends survived.
She did feel annoyed though. How would she lead her fighters to glory and death ? On her back, crawling with her only arm ? Perhaps she would do that, and not enter the fight. What about the ambushes though ?
Another column of fire lit the night. The fight was still going on. Then a tremendous roar, and a loud noise. Then her friends got out of the cave, one by one. Some were injured but they were all alive.

They formed a circle around her. There was nothing to say, or there was something to say, but they all knew what it was, so it was no use. Caņar the spearman had been travelling with her almost from the beginning. Ustress the lasher too, even though her right hand was broken and she had fought with her shield. They were both as famous as her.
She looked at their face, lit by the burning tree, under the snow.
Then she stopped breathing.
