This makes my plan to recreate the Haunted Mansion that much easier, especially now that we've got grave markers!

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.

I'm going to end up with ghosts my plumbing systems, I just know it.  There's always that one child who wanders into the reservoir for a drink while I'm filling it.  Last one who did that got sucked into the plumbing, and then there's the average citizen who decides to fall into the well or waterfall (despite the grates on the latter, I don't know how that happened).

Weaponizing, however, sounds dangerous given that there is no offswitch, and knowing toady there'll be some quirks that would likely prevent us from popping ghosts on and off.

Are slabs buildings or constructions?  Because if they're buildings, and if removing them causes the ghost to respawn (if), then just build some slabs where building destroyers can get to them.

Am I the only one who thought "legendary axedwarf. outdoor barracks. starvation." the split second that I saw the thread?

So we got monsters above, monsters below, dwarves in the middle and a party in the dining hall. Sounds good to me.
If all else fails, remember one thing:  kittens are delicious, nutritious little goblin-baiters, cavern explorers, and ambush-finders.

That second if (if removing them causes the ghost to respawn) seems unlikely.

Best idea so far seems to be create a starvation room (Crypt?) where you want the ghosts to haunt. Like ten tiles in front of your main gate. Next test is whether the combat effectiveness of the dwarf at death effects the deadliness of his ghost or not. It might turn out to be a great use for all those excess potash maker migrant waves. Especially since you can starve them before they develop any meaningful relationships.

Also, if you use squads to get them in the room, make sure they aren't toting food & drinks with them  :-[

There, I don't think it would be very spoilerish.

In both cases, the answer is slabs.

Use burrows to cause idle couples of dwarves until

Are Ghosts affected by Burrow/previous burrows?

If they just hang around where they went in life then give them a small burrow near your defences or gate etc. so when they appear as ghosts they spend most of their time there?

The once dark-grey walls are now the dark brown of stained blood. At either side of the path leading to the great granite gates is covered with the corpses and skeletons of Goblin invaders.
Some are still fresh. One is still moving.
As you approach the gate a nervous guard looses a bolt in your direction. Silence... Slowly, gradually, the huge doors screech open. Inside there is a courtyard, the floor wet with blood. Welcome to the front-line. Welcome; to Cloisteredwood.
