Strange equipment
« on: November 15, 2010, 12:59:08 pm »

Is it true that every single elf in the game has a wooden weapon?? One of my heroes started with oaken sword, and I have recently fought a patrol that beat me to death with birchen shortswords and maple longswords. It took them several hours to beat my unconscious body before finally killing me. Excruciating.

The entire content consists of senseless murder, a pile of faceless naked women and zero regard for human life in general, all in the service of the protagonist's base impulses. It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

Elves as a race do not use anything but wooden equipment. Which makes assorted ranged units their only truly dangerous type. However, the rest easily act as maceelves, which is still dangerous enough to stay on guard.
If you start as an elf adventurer, look in your backpack. There should be a large copper dagger there. A great emergency weapon, and a great starter for an elf. Found it out after spending a ton of real-time scratching a sasquatch to death with a wooden sword, and put it out of its misery with a couple of well-placed stabs with a dagger. Once you have an opportunity, though, get a metal weapon... if elves can wield them that is; I didn't get that far with that elf.

Elves most definitely can wield metal weapons.  Feel free to swipe the weapons from any outlaws you knock down or to buy a sword from the human stores.

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

You don't even have to kill anyone to get a weapon - just grab it while you fight them and wrestle it out of their grasp. Then hack them to death with it for double satisfaction.

I encounter an elf outlaw with a band of elves... and they were all armed with bronze and iron weapons.  It was a much more painful experience than I was anticipating.  Do outlaws follow different rules even if they are elves, or had they killed off some humans at some point and taken their weapons?

They were probably members of a Human or Goblin civilization - when Elves are assimilated into another civilization, they abandon their original morals and ethics and adopt those of their new civilization.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Yes elves can definitely use metal equipment, it's just their society cannot produce them. I modded elves to have a city and sure enough they only sell wooden stuff in the stores. Outlaw camps also have wooden gear in the loot chests/bags.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Elves have wooden stuff for a purpose though. Give them metal and enough centuries and there won't be anything else left in the world.
