Difficulty level: Dwarf Fortress
« on: November 15, 2010, 10:37:50 am »

The wiki for AI war: Fleet Commander contains a hilarious reference to Dwarf Fortress. The article is big, so use your browser to find the phrase "dwarf fortress" and then read the sentence.

I was about to say that "DF isn't THAT difficult", but then I remembered the continous goblin sieges that eventually brought my 150+ dwarf fortress to its knees.

I mean, at one point a new siege arrived before the last one was finished!

The quote is:
Quote
Risk Of Losing

The risk of losing is actually higher during the endgame phase, but the risk is high enough during the middlegame that a huge number of games never make it to the endgame. If you're playing at a difficulty level in keeping with your skill level, this is a pretty hard game. If you play on difficulty 10 or something else equally insane, it's pretty much Dwarf Fortress hard.

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

One moment you have 70 estatic dwarves, next moment, someone doesn't pull a lever, next memeent your drafting every avaiable hand into the military and the next you are whiped out

That's pretty easy: close the doors.

DF overall is pretty easy, once you have the farming set up and a drawbridge over a channelled moat to keep out the few unwanted building-destroyers that drop by. The real difficulty is the inefficient interface that has, among other examples, five different sets of keys for the usual job of scrolling done by the arrow keys alone. (You scroll in various contexts either with the arrow keys, with the -+ keys in conversations and many lists, with /* keys in picking stuff up, with the HJUN keys for farm and embark plots, and occasionally with the numberpad separately from the arrow keys. Whew.)

Anyway, a wiki is edited by many different people... so I guess this means a random user who plays DF edited the wiki recently?

At least spell my name right.

Dwarf Fortress is as hard as you make it. Of course it will be easy if you close your fortress off behind a moat any time something scary comes wanting some dwarf meat. But if your a true dwarf you will take that beast to the beard and keep on going.
