I need a way to fire companions, I've got a few with no hands that refuse to leave.  :( :(

In the past I've had issues with companions leaving one of my characters if I mistakenly attempted to target them (not alt+y, just alt+A). That may have been a bug.

You can outrun them and eventually they should lose interest and get gobbled up by the Great Kanto Desert fun.

Red Rum is always an option. Provides a good distraction while you escape their range.

Lastly, get them killed like Emily said.

In adventure mode I killed a Hydra within fifteen minutes, and then was mortally wounded by Carp while swimming in a river.

I lose a lot of companions when gabbos ambush us in our sleep =(

Though it does lead to some epic fights, me vs the captain with gobbos/my companions dying all around us.

Back on topic, getting them killed as a way to fire them is pretty lame.  I wish I could just tell em to go home/wait here while I fight the hydra alone etc etc.

I swam around a castle who's entrance seemed to be blocked by water,  and when I finished circling around they were all gone.  So if you have any swimming skill try crossing a river or lake to lose them.

If you want to lose all companions, sleep but not on the travel map. When you wake up, everyone will be stunned, and if you travel that instant, they will all remain behind sleeping. Found it out the hard way after sleeping right before entering a bandit camp with a ton of lashers and ended up going alone.

Also.

I need a way to !!fire!! companions

There's your answer.

Embarked on a haunted volcano. I am currently terrorized by skeletal alligators.

Heh, that's been one of the "friendlier" old methods for a while now...it just got a bit more varied/different now. Like getting cats lost in a forest....a hunted forest....at night.

Mercenary 1: Zzz...hm...Huh? Wha...hey guys wake up!
Mercenary 2:bwuh? *grumble* What's up man?
Mercenary 1:Our client gone! He left us in the middle of the hunted woods & took all the loot!
Mercenary 3: F$^#! I knew something was up when he told us to make camp in the middle of The Nightmare Swamps!
Mercenary 2: Let's hurry & we might just fi.........Uh, did anyone else hear cackling or something?

This happened to me when I was relying on a random peasant to keep the bogeymen away while I traveled a bit further than I could go in one day.  ...needless to say I was punched to death.

If you sleep in a castle, some of your companions might leave you and stay in the castle. I had a very injured hammerman with me and he became U after I woke up, and so did my uninjured crossbowman. But the new people I hired before I went to sleep remained my companions. The crossbowman agreed to join me the second time (even though he was highly skilled and "blinking")

Well if I abandon my companions that way will I eventually run out of recruit-able human soldiers?

Also I got out of fast travel and one of my companions randomly had all of his nerves (including brain) useless.  He followed me for a while then suffocated =<

If you press c the number of companions showing up are the ones who will fast travel with you the ones who are lost and no longer with you are not counted in it

Warp travel can have some side effects.

Still, !!fire!! is the dwarfiest solution.

I lose random men all the time for some reason.  I'll leave town with 12 soldiers, travel once and lose a few, travel again and lose a few more...

Try traveling a lot is my best advice.

Incidentally, if anyone knows how to stop this from happening I would be very grateful.
