Magma forge requiring iron anvil?
« on: September 19, 2006, 01:01:00 pm »

I nearly tore my hair out trying to build a magma forge today. The requirements listed were an anvil and steel bars. I had a steel anvil and a steel bar, so I assumed I needed more steel bars and went on a massive excavation mission in search of more iron ore.

It was only later that I thought it might want the iron anvil (which is just named anvil). I built one, and the magma forge could be built!

Only, I built it with the steel anvil, not the iron one.

I guess the bug here is that the magma forge looks for an iron anvil when checking if you have everything needed to build it, even though it can be built with a steel anvil.

I'm guessing that steel anvils don't let you pass the initial check to make normal forges, either.

Is there any advantage to having a steel anvil, though?  Is there any reason the player would want to make one?

Oh, and you should just take apart your old regular forge when making the magma forge in any case.  You don't need it anymore, you can reuse the anvil, and you don't want manager-assigned jobs or anything ending up there, do you?

Steel anvils work perfectly fine and there are no special checks to use them.  Your problem is likely that the anvil was "in use".  When something is tasked (tsk) to be moved/stored it can not be used for anything else (like building a forge) until that job is done.

One time it took an entire season for my dwarves to get around to carrying a steel anvil from my magma forge all the way to the furniture pile at the entrance.  All that just so I could finally tell them to carry it all the way back and make me another magma forge.

But is their any reason to make them?  As far as I can tell, iron anvils can do everything steel ones do, and take less effort to produce.

I just presumed I'd need a steel one as I needed steel everything else for doing things with the lava.

The steel anvil wasn't in use, and had been sitting in my furniture stockpile for ages.

The code makes no distinctions or even mentions of specific materials for anvils as far as I can tell, except that the one brought during the summer is iron.  I guess making a steel anvil right now is just a mark of vanity, kind of like making an adamantine anvil.
