I'm not trying to put a damper on things, but you're basically saying that the DF community should raise $500-$1000 to make a song, when other options exist, and the money would be, for the community, better spent on donating to Toady.

Agreed. As awesome as the song is, the money would be better off going to Toady himself. If the community wants the song badly enough, they'll put it together.

Orr... we could get the Andrew guy hooked to DF, so he'll do it for free.

I had not imagined it'd be that expensive.

We'll find out soon enough. I already contacted him. Perhaps that fact the tune and lyrics are already there will drive down the price.

^This

I'm sorry but thats just way overpriced to make a subpar indie song. I know a few people in college that do similar quality stuff for fun.
I'm not saying every money ever should go for DF, but personaly, I'd prefer to raise money for toady to keep developing a game that has been entertaining me for more then a year rather then a song I might not even enjoy, and if I do, I'll forget about it in a week, tops.

I agree with the sensible people. If you (Like me) love Toady and what he's doing and if you (Unlike me) have disposable income, I want you to take the money you would spend on this mostly pointless song and give it straight to Tarn.

And its not even a matter of how good the song can turn out to be, its a matter of basic cost-benefit. How much enjoyment can you derive from a 3 minute song that costed you $600?

Of course, I can't really tell anyone what to do with their money, but if anyone actualy spends +$500 on a song made by some indie band that lasts a few minutes, please tell me, it'll give me something to laugh about in my spare time.

I agree that it seems a bit pointless to rally to get this song made for any kind of price over maybe twenty bucks. Since all you'd need would be a singer (possibly with a few of his own vocal tracks running at once to add we-all-sing-at-the-pub shanty-ness) you'd be far better off looking for a singer who'd be willing (possibly on a music forum somewhere), either for free or for a small $10-20 fee, or just saying something along the lines of "looking for b12ers with low gruff voices to add voices to DF song."

If you can manage to pull together maybe three people willing to do it, I can talk to them about sending me the vocal tracks alone then properly mixing it myself and maybe adding some pub-esque background ambience and a bit other flavour.

I do have a gruff voice but a thick, thick french accent. And no recording equipement (aside from the macbook microphone, but yeah). Also, can't sing.
Still, if you want a gruff guffaw or something, sign me up.

You should take out the part of 'making love to the rock' with something more forward.

I have talking with Andrew, and he says:
Quote
Ok cool.  I believe the song would be better overall if I recorded the
instruments, not only in terms of recording quality but also for
dynamics and being able to do the mix myself.  But since you're open
to different options, and because they'll range a fair bit in price,
I'll give you a few different quotes here and we can do whatever works
for you and the others.

To record the song with vocals and guitar only, I would charge $200.

To add MIDI violin and flute to the above I would charge an additional
$50, or for a real violin and flute I could hire session players for
an additional $150.  (Or $75 for either one.)

And to use the mp3 you linked to earlier and just record vocals on
top, I would charge $100.

Let me know what works for you, and don't hesitate if you have any
questions.  I could have everything done within 2 weeks of being paid.
The rest of my commission info is listed below.
1.  Many of my commissions are not posted on songstowearpantsto.com,
to help keep the site's content varied.  If you would specifically
like me to post or refrain from posting your song, please let me know
right away.

2.  Your song will be delivered by email as a high-quality MP3.  If
needed, I can provide it in most other major digital formats.  To have
a CD mailed to you, please add $8 to cover shipping and materials.

3.  I can accept two methods of payment:
(a) Email Money Transfers: This is a free feature offered by most
major banks.  From your online account, use pantaloons@gmail.com as
the recipient address and email me with the question/password
combination you've chosen.
(b) PayPal:  Sign up free at www.paypal.com - from your account,
choose the "Send Money" tab and use pantaloons@gmail.com as the
recipient email.

4.  I retain the copyrights to all my recordings while permitting you
to play and share them non-commercially, but I'm open to making
different arrangements if you feel it's necessary for your song.  Let
me know.
I've cut out the rest of the correspondence, but no information there. So, it isn't anywhere near as expensive as we thought, but is still $100 min.

Thanks for that, bb. Still, I have a feeling Toady'll be happier with 200 bucks in his pocket...
