Unlike many people, I seem to actually enjoy playing the M3 Lee. Then again, I tend to like tank destroyers, so there is that...

The gun's not even that bad, too.

Are you kidding? That gun is great! It's pretty much the main reason why the Lee can be fun. For me, at least, the fun part of playing it was figuring out where to park myself so that I could get in shots without the giant hull profile screwing me over. The side position gun, while shitty if your cover was wrong-handed, was also great if it corresponded to the gun position.

Frankly, if they ever properly implement secondary guns the Lee will become quite good. Same deal with some of the french tanks with real secondary guns and the Churches with the big hull-mount cannon that never gets used.

So, I really just started playing when a friend drew me in to this game. I've been having a good time with the Tier 2 SPG, the T57?. Anyway, from what my friend told me, due to their nature, lower tier SPGs are generally matched as if a higher tier? Anyway, who/what should I be targeting with this tank?

Arty and scout tanks (read: T4+ lights) have different MM, yes. The normal range is your tier +/- 2 tiers. Arty and scouts get something like up to ~4-5 tiers above their own, and scouts are something of a gamble, as they can also get normal matchmaking. If you're driving something like the ELC, getting put into a T5 match typically has obscene results.

Keep in mind, too, that the low-tier arty (2-3) aren't really reflective of their betters, particularly in terms of range, so you're much more likely to die in them than in higher tier arty, as you have to get much closer to the enemy to hit anything. Generally you should aim for stationary targets, especially ones that have weak armor or are giving you a good shot profile (i.e. parked somewhere where your aiming reticule is fairly round, rather than in defilade on a slope). If you hit something dead on and don't damage it (much more likely for a T2-3 arty to not hurt a T5 heavy than for a T4+ arty to not hurt things it will face), just move on. If an enemy gets too close and nobody is intercepting, you can leave the overwatch aiming mode and shoot like a TD.

Also, learn where arty typically hides. Once you know that, you can watch those locations on the enemy side of the map for shell traces and do counterbattery fire, to kill the enemy arty without anyone having to light it up.

Awesome advice thanks! I hope I manage to get ok at this game, I'm also running a Russian light tank at tier 2 (t-26). Trying to get a broad range of experience so I'm not completly useless in anything, plus it keeps gameplay varied, and me interested.

Which arty lines are better? I'm trying to get through American arty, currently on the M37, it's a slow grind and I'm wondering if it's worth it to keep going or if it would be better to switch to one of the other countries.

I think it goes pretty much like this
Americans have the most damage but least accuracy
Russian have good accuracy and arc
Germans are the jack of all trades
French i'm not really sure but their tier 8 has a turret and an auto loader.

I'm currently on the M41 on american arty and i'm really enjoying it. Hated the M7 Priest though.

Germany has the Wespe. Frankly, I've never seen one but they seem awesome.

In my experience the German arty has the highest arc (Grille, my man!), and at least at T4 German arty has by far the most powerful gun. Various other things: the SU-26 is the only turreted arty in the game but has painfully low range, and the SU-5 can only carry a handful of shells.

My experience has shown me that the most consistently accurate arty is the French(have I mentioned lately how much I LOVE my my AMX 13F3? )
