This love for the Hetzer is sort of hilarious to me. Back during closed beta, for a long time the Hetzer was considered a painful grind and overly fragile for the enemies it went up against. I don't think they've specifically over buffed it, but I feel like just as they changed the game, the various updates, physics changes, changes to the armor angle calculations, matchmaking changes, it's just grown to be a complete beast in the battles it tends to get.

Personally, I'm more of a StugIII fan, but the Hetzer really is good at what it does and I hate having to go up against it in a battle. The Hetzer is one of the few things my Valentine II just dreads running into.

And yeah, while you're still at tier 3 and below, you're matched up against a lot of stuff you can actually fight pretty well one on one, even in a light tank. Be careful, use cover, don't sit out in the open and don't be afraid to run if you're out numbered. At these tiers you're less of a dedicated scout and more of an active participant in battle. There are a few tanks/setups which are exceptions, given they're extremely fast and lightly armed. (Pz I C comes to mind, with it's machine gun) All I can suggest in those cases is have fun driving your tank around. I can have plenty of fun just zooming around taking pot shots at people. Also learn to drift if you can get ahold of a fast enough tank. It'll serve you well if you get into the T-50(-2) or especially the ELC AMX with its limited turret traverse.

Quick and dirty explanation of drifting, go full speed, release throttle and hit a turn direction. If you're in a fast enough, light enough tank on good ground, you'll slide as you turn. Slopes affect this greatly, but you'll just have to practice using those to good effect(or learning when you can't do it at all)

Good conditions in the ELC will let me drift and spin almost 180 degrees to get behind an enemy and point right at their rear. Even fair conditions can get me a solid side shot. It's always a risky prospect as it leaves your light, vulnerable tank near to or completely motionless at the end, but in some circumstances it can save your life or at least give some meaning to a hopeless situation. And hell, it just feels damn cool to do and I rarely feel bad even if I die after a good drift if it ends in a nice solid shot or especially a kill.

Bikari: I'm not incredibly deep into them, but I'll offer my experiences:

KV-1: Hands down the best T5 heavy and a credit-printing machine. Not much to say about it, apart from noting the autobounce plate on the forward armor, as that is carried over to a lot of higher tier heavies. The basic lesson it teaches is to always keep your hull oriented towards the enemy line, as the sides are fairly weak and unsloped. The top gun is damned good for the MM it gets, and the frontal armor is also very good. You can bounce shells from T6-7 heavies if they hit the right places.

KV-1S: Crap until you get the long 122mm. Once you do, it makes for a pretty good flanker (as it has a decent turn of speed, comparable to a slower medium) and sniper/peeker, thanks to the longish reload. Like all of the T6 Soviet heavies it has the autobounce plate; also like them, it has fairly weak side armor.

KV-2: Garbage until you have the 152mm derp. Once you do, it's a god-tier support tank. I've had plenty of times where I one-shotted T6 heavies with side shots, and it is pretty much auto-kill for T4-5s, apart from some of the T5 heavies. There's nothing quite like seeing a T8 heavy running away from you, either. The gun mantlet occupies most of the front of the turret and can bounce or eat almost anything you face, and the frontal armor is still good, but the sides of the turret are massive, vertical, and thin, as is the rest of the hull.

It's very much a support tank; I once managed to pull off a win in a 1v4 situation, but that was only because the enemies were idiots and came at me piecemeal. You're looking at an obscenely long reload time even with a rammer and 100% crew, so you really aren't suited for front line brawling. People will yell at you for sniping with it; don't listen. If you can lead your shots properly, you can pop enemies from very far out, provided you let the gun aim completely. Hide behind cover and bigger friends, take your time, and you'll do very well.

IS: Essentially the KV-1S mark II. Better armor, a bit bigger, and that's about all. The second best gun for it is the long 122 from the KV-1S, and the top gun is the same gun with a very slightly faster reload. Now, granted, it's still a decent gun for this tier, but you'll do better playing support/sniper in T7-9 matches.  Also note that if you've elited the KV-13, the top gun for that is one of the available weaker guns for the IS, and it makes a decent stopgap until you get the upgraded turret and mount the long 122.

I haven't played the T-150, but from what I've heard it's essentially the KV-1 but more, so an all-around brawler.

Basically they're very good tanks if you play them properly, and they're tough enough to take a bit of punishment if you screw up. If nothing else get the KV-1, as it's pretty much an assured minimum of 10k credits per match.

Also, if it's worth anything, three of my four highest (base) exp matches were in the KV-1S, KV-1, and KV-2 respectively. My match with the most kills (8) was in my KV-1, and I'd estimate that around 2/5 of my Top Guns came from Soviet heavies.

400+ games in the Jagdpz E-100 and you kind of get used to people poking their heads out, thinking "Lolnope" and disappearing behind a rock to never come out again xD no-one wants to take a shell from the 170mm PaK46 and honestly, more games than I'd care to admit in that thing I go without firing a single shot because people actively run from it. If I get a kill it's usually from a hill and in cover where I can't be seen. And at 250mm of sloped armor at the front, it's fools errand to try and take it on.

I really would recommend someone tries it at least once if they enjoy tank destroyers.

I got halfway to it before selling the JagdTiger, it just ceased to be fun lately, it got stale and annoying to wait a bit, get killed by arty, have a team of retards, have a good game and repeat the whole process while bleeding cash most of the time. Plus I didn't like the incredible gameplay change the JPZE100 made, it felt wrong and lazy to completely negate an entire line of tanks which relied on crazy good DPM with accurate and high penetrating guns while having decent armour and mobility. Then you get to T10 and it's a big fat house with 1k damage shots that more often than not either miss or hit for no damage.

That said, the M48A1 was also regarded as bad after it was nerfed heavily and I was wary of getting it too, but after the inital rough patch with the T9 gun it's an absolute dream to drive. The damage is incredible while accuracy and penetration require little to no effort in the aiming department. It's easily becoming one of my favourite tanks to drive :D

Ok, I'm sure this is some crazy good luck or something but these are my last three matches with the M48:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

These are with premium so the profits are slightly higher than usual but man, this thing is hella sweet :D

This. The KV-2 falls under the same aegis, IMO.

Has the Pz. 1 C been nerfed at all since its debut? If not, those little bastards are terrifying. I've fought them in Hetzers, for a short while. They've survived the 105.

That's got to be a tremendous set of coincidences working together. I love the little bugger, but one thing it isn't is durable. That, and in roughly 1/2 of your matches you won't be able to penetrate most of the field. If you take away the speed it's too slow to survive getting close enough for the MG to work, and if you take away the MG it's another shit-tier light. That aside, the Pz. 1 G has that nasty T5 3cm autocannon (the same one that the Luchs gets); I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about that. I know that if the C gets nerfed I'm switching to the G.

Three matches later, you notice the fatal flaw: the gun's range is roughly equal to your view range.  :P

Fatal flaw? Not really. I'm sneaky enough due to the turret that I'm okay most of the time, and my team should be in between me and them anyway, if I'm in Strategic view.

I wanted to like the SU-26. Hell, I do like it... on maps the size of Ensk. When I switched over to German arty I just about slapped myself. Admittedly, the fact that it's turreted means that it's better suited for close-range support, but if anyone breaks through you're usually fucked. I got so fed up with it that I sold it and decided to re-enter the Soviet arty line via the KV-2 to S-51 connection. To each their own, I suppose. :|

Anyone else here play the soviet TD line? I'm on the SU85 right now and am curious how much of a grind I have ahead of me, in respect to the tanks ahead.

Also, is the T1 heavy worth anything, followed by the rest of the line? I kind of forget what american tanks have in their favor.

The t1 heavy is total ass. But it leads to the t29, which is perhaps the best heavy in its tier if you know how to use the terrain to shield your hull. The "typical" advantage of American tanks is gun depression. They can park on steeper hills and still be able to shoot straight or down.
