Major Lag- Now a Question about area difficulty
« on: November 13, 2010, 09:33:53 pm »

I have been playing since .14, and with .17 released I have decided to try it, and now DF is freezing every few seconds for me.  >:(

Any ideas how to fix? Or am I headed back to .16? (I don't play adventure mode much anyways)

is it a terrifying map? I stopped playing biomes with undead altogether in DF2010. The miasma clouds kill your fps.

I've also reduced cavern layers to 1, to try to improve performance. I dont know how successful will this be

 :o

I didn't know that terrifying does that. I was looking for a new, challenging place. Any suggestions then if terrifying is out?

In fact, what is the list of the most dangerous to the most simple maps, from greatest to least?

evil biomes spawn undead. Zombies spawn miasma clouds. Miasma clouds lag you out.
(Now they only do this "inside" (in caves and underground) but it's still bad enough.

What I do is go for Untamed Wilds and the like, which tend to spawn nasty critters (elephants, yetis) yet not miasmakill you. You'll still be getting Forgotten Beasts, Titans, and all the other nasty things, so dont worry on those grounds.

Well, I always seem to get passive elephants when I go to Untamed Wilds. Only time I had problems with wildlife is a random-ass yeti killing a dwarf on the surface on one of my forts.

Any way to make the elephants siege me like in Boatmurdered? I want a REAL challenge. Like, start-out-and-come-under-attack challenge.

.17 in general is really slow for me.

The mod section has several mods to satisfy this kind of masochistic gameplay.

I've never noticed zombies slowing down my forts though.

Embarking right on top of danger is very hit and miss. I guess if you modded out a lot of the wildlife like groundhogs (or made them huge) you'd have all threatening wildlife.

Remove miasma tags from objects in material template to remove miasma from rot all together. It's not your fault that demons are killing each other and rotting in hell so there's no reason having to suffer from it.

reducing cavern layer to 1 definitely help performance because it remove all the associated layers with lower caverns while acting as layer 1-3 by itself. I get 20+ layer embarks with 1 cavern. with 3 it's generally 40+ and thus generate more lags.
