Eugenics
« on: November 13, 2010, 08:28:24 pm »

I noticed there isnt a spot for the study of eugenics (what stats effect what such as more muscular = more meat)...mostly in animals...but I think it might be helpful to have in there.

I think this might be served better by a name like "Husbandry," which is a polite way of referring to inbreeding. It also has the added bonus of sounding more like pastoral England than, say, Nazi Germany.

Exept in DF you slaughter the unwanted types, which is more like Nazi Germany than pastoral england. Eugenics is a better term here.

While true, we should probably present a more wholesome DF to the world than that which can be accomplished by the most monstrous depraved dedicated players.

You do the same thing in husbandry. You cull out the unwanted individuals, one way or another.

Personally, I'd think of "Husbandry" for animal breeding and Eugenics for people/dwarves. After all, dwarves do pass down traits from parents to children as well.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

I've been studying this phenomena and I have to say that I think it's bullshit. Dwarves are only allowed into my military if they possess positive and only positive physical traits when they arrive as migrants (thus doing away with the possibility that they may have trained up their stats), but having had several children born in fortresses, they rarely if ever, have ANY positive traits. It's almost like anti-genetics.

Also, Husbandry is a better term because I believe we will soon be able to select animals for breeding, much as we do for butchering and only the animals we specify will be allowed to breed.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

@Rowanas: I concur. The reason attributes are inconsistent is because they aren't genetic. If you do strength training all of your life and have a child, it won't be any stronger than if you cull the power training. What you need to look at is the white text which are traits (Cheeckbones, fat/skinnyness, skin tone, etc.)
You can't expect to reproduce midget superman through training as you also can't make a socially adept children because the parent is a natural.

I agree.
After all, that's how they are used in RL.

Fat is a useful trait if its controllable.  Much like in real life when gladiators had a fat layer to help protect against glancing cuts a good fat layer in DF combat really helps.  Your dwarfs also gain fat as they age i think, feed em well and that

Perhaps your dwarves are anti-breeding because you put the desirable traits in the military?

If we're talking about animals, I'd always thought that this was called selective breeding.

The fact that you'd have to wait for years if not centuries before seeing any practical gain?
