Military screen interface bug
« on: September 18, 2006, 07:47:00 am »

The "squad assignment marker" (*) that highlights the future squad commander seems to correspond to the screen line instead of the actual dwarf. This leads to that marker changing from one dwarve to another if the screen position of the dwarves moves during an asignment to a squad.

Is that a bug or a preference?  What would people prefer?  Is it disorienting if the screen were to jump to a new position when you press enter?

I think what he's trying to say is:

Say you have a group of dwarves, called dwarf[30]. The military screen is displaying dwarf[0] to dwarf[9], showing 10 units at a time. dwarf[5] is marked as commander. when you scroll down one screen, the commander marker shifts from dwarf[5] to dwarf[5+10]. the +10 because it's the next 10 dwarves being displayed.

Hmm, I'm not sure I understood that myself, gah.

Hm, seems I've been not too clear.

If you assign a dwarve to an existing squad, that dwarve's name is moved from its position to a position below the selected squad leader. All dwarves between the new and old position will shift their screen position by one, to fill in the created "gap". If the assigned dwarve's screen position was above the new squad leader, this will lead to the squad leader (and all dwarves up to the new recruit) shifting up one position on the screen. But the squad leader marker will stay at its old screen position, now pointing to the first dwarve below the squad's leader. If you now assign another dwarve to the squad, he'll be assigned to the now marked dwarve, creating a sub-squad.
This leads to a different behaviour of unit assignment dependent of whether the assigned dwarves have a screen location above or below the marked squad leader:
- below: the squad leader's position on the screen doesn't change, he keeps the marker, any further assignments leads to dwarves beeing assigned directly below him.
- above: the squad leader's screen position is shifted one upwards, the marker stays at its old position, marking now the first dwarve below the leader, any further assignments creat a sub-squad under this dwarve.

I think it makes sense now.  If it's not updating the index of the selected commander as you run around choosing soldiers that's a problem.
