Two handed weapons all the way.

Of course I sometimes end up with an adventurer that just randomly happens to be large enough that the two handed sword can be wielded one handed without penalty, then I just take my copper dagger out of my backpack and wield it in my off hand.   Shields are for pansies....and throwing Captain America style.

I am starting to appreciate the power of wrestling, so I go with shield, free hand, and wrestling + shield user + kicker skills. You can dislocate limbs easily, apply chokeholds, and when the opponent passes out, you stomp on his head. The ultimate maneuver = grap left foot with right hand + grab opponent's weapon with left forearm + kick him in the head. If this ain't cool, I don't know what is.

The entire content consists of senseless murder, a pile of faceless naked women and zero regard for human life in general, all in the service of the protagonist's base impulses. It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

I like using a spear and a shield. When my spear get's stuck in someone's body I start smashing his face with the shield.
Works suprisingly well. My last adventurer's shield had more kills than his spear.

I have been using wrestling and fists lately, works okay. an Axe and a fork has been my best combo yet.

I really like dual wielding. My best adventurer to date wore a Longsword and a shortsword- Once both got stuck in someones upper body, piercing both lungs. A kick to the head later and that enemy was history.

I found the combo Mace + Dagger or Sword to be effective, too. You are effective against anything that you can meet. Dual spear is funny, but not as effective as the other combinations.

I think Dual wielding is a viable alternative to normal weapon + shield. If you are unlucky and your weapon gets stuck into someone you can always use the other one; And it looks badass.

Depends. With some I dual wield, some I use a shield, some I go with one handed single weapon, and a fist. I'm fond of stabbing the gut, and shield bashing the skull though. Considering using two shields and wrestling soon.

there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.
this image relates to the slaying of Utes Gozrusroz

I tried dual wielding for a whole 5 seconds.

Got excited about another long sword, picked it up and charged the remaining goblins, and promptly got a bolt through my eye.

Think I'lll stick to my sword and shields.

^Did you remember to set attack defense preference to "dodge"?

Actually, I have to ask: how do you wield a weapon two-handed, and when can you tell if you're being penalized for wielding too large a weapon with one hand?

I like using two battle axes when i go with my axe-savant dwarf build. That way if an axe gets stuck i can keep hacking without spending time to unstick it. Got plenty of awesome decapitations that way.

I like how shield blocks dragon fire, but sometime I go with a couple short swords just for the look of it.

I wonder, is not having a free hand that block me from the more awesome wrestling moves or is it skill based?

Yes, it is, though you can still do plenty with just a shoulder lock.

Actually, I have to ask: how do you wield a weapon two-handed, and when can you tell if you're being penalized for wielding too large a weapon with one hand?

Hold only your weapon, put anything else in your hands in your pack.  Then check your inventory.

On your weapon's line way off to the side (where it usually says right hand or left hand) your two handed weapon will now say 'multigrasp'.  Your adventurer  automatically switched to a two handed grip when the other hand was freed up.

If it still says right hand or left hand when you have nothing else in your hands your character is large enough to wield the weapon one handed without penalty. They won't switch to a two handed grip unless it is necessary.

P.S. As a bonus and to be up with the current topic, when wielding multigrasp your off hand still counts as a free hand for wrestling.
