With targeted shots and the ability to chose what you attack with the ability to dual wield becomes viable.

Being a pikeman the choice was obvious, AFAIK I can't even use a shield, but I think the large copper dagger you spawn with is quite useful.

From time to time you'll see that some part of the body is impossible to hit, can't quite connect but with an exclamation point next to it.  That's some kind of attack you can hit very well with either your foot, bite or your off hand weapon.  The dagger is way better for that than some lame shield.

Besides slashing some monsters head off with a dagger while your pike is embedded in said monster is always fun.

It'd be fun if there was ever a magic system implemented, and staffs.
You could be like Gandalf! A staff in one hand and a sword in the other!

Personally I have always mostly used sword and shield characters. Though have more recently switched to knife-wielding adventurers with high wrestling skills. I must say that I did actually kill a swamp titan with a shield once (on accident). Shields are surprisingly effective and especially when you're using a character that has an edged weapon and you're fighting a foe that you should be hitting with a blunt weapon or some such thing.

In the future I might try to make a character that uses two different kinds of weapons and see how that goes.

I go with a crossbow, a two-handed sword, and four shields.

I can't be hit, I can fire from a distance, and chop and stab and bash and bash and bash and bash!

I use shields because I prefer longevity to greater power, plus this is one of the few games where shields are really work a crap.

It seems that I always get really good opportunities when my weapon is stuck-in, so if I'm using something like a spear I'll also wield a dagger. Otherwise, a shield works really well.

Pff, I refuse to dual-wield on principle of how unrealistic it is in real life... Well, perhaps excepting rapier/dagger, like in 1600's spain. I use a shield or two-handed weapon... Why do you need a second blade when you have teeth, anyway?

Can anyone explain exactly how opportunity attacks work?  Is it sort of random that sometimes you'll get an opportunity attack, is it based on your facing, opponent's stance (standing or prone), your stance, or what?

As far as I know it's completely random.

I wonder how effective it would be to duel wield a sharp and blunt weapon (eg, hammer and sword).  Theoretically you would have a weapon for every occasion..

Well it depends on what I'm in the mood for.
Right now I'm sneeking around in silk armour deul weilding daggers. Sneeky assasin am I! I fully expect to have fun at my first real combat situation beyond taking out targets around a bandit camp.

As far as I know it's completely random.

Right now it's almost completely random (the only non-random factor is being conscious), but Toady plans to eventually implement things like reach (for instance, attacking a body part much higher than you is automatically an Impossible Strike) and response opportunities (the quintessential example is striking or jumping onto the head of a dragon as it tries to bite you).

I use one hand to wield my weapon and I leave the other hand free. Never know when you'll need to perform some eye-gouging or to wrestle someone's weapon away.

I prefer to stick every weapon I have out and rush at the hapless enemies like a shield-covered wrecking ball studded with pointy things.
