Cancels Plant Seeds: cannot find any my of 200 Plump Hel

I'd be surprised if this hadn't been asked before, but why on earth does this happen?  I've got spawn lying all over the place: in stockpiles, the brewery, in barrels, bags, on tables, in the fields themselves.

Is the dwarf in question trapped somewhere? Perhaps a workshop or a statue is blocking his only exit and he can't get out.

Also check for doors you may have forbidden.

This is probably the same issue as the "cannot find food" problem: all the spawns are allready  "used up" by some other jobs. Those in the brewery, on the table etc. are all part of "carry to a barrel" jobs, so you have to leave them out of your counting anyways. Those in bags and barrels in your stockpile might be allready reserved by brewing, cooking and other planting jobs.

Hmm.  I think that dwarves need the ability to override 'carry to barrel' and 'carry to stockpile' jobs when fetching something.  It's silly for another dwarf to drag a plump helmet off to a stockpile when another dwarf three feet from it wants to use it.

The dwarves weren't physically blocked or anything, it was as Satyr said: all the seeds were reserved for hauling jobs.

It appears to be a combination of two problems: the one Satyr described, and as far as I can tell, items not in stockpiles cannot be used for any purpose until they get hauled to a stockpile first.  Or maybe that's just a specialized case of the first problem: items not in stockpiles get reserved for hauling jobs and become inaccessible.

I agree with Aquillion: non-hauling jobs should have access to items queued for hauling, as long as they're not actively being hauled.  Maybe that'd fix the "lye not available" problem at the ashery too.

Edit: And ideally, they'd grab the nearest item to them, like my masons do.

For the time being, I've learned to employ tons of dedicated food haulers when producing a lot of food so that the seeds are stockpiled quickly, the harvest gets barrelled, and that meat I bought from the traders doens't spoil.
