What IS a hero?
« on: November 13, 2010, 07:45:59 am »

Just wondering about the three difficulty levels of Hero, Peasant, and Demigod.
What do these things mean in context to your fantasy world as a whole, because right now you seem to lack a back story.

Anyway anyone have any guess about the social significances  of your starting options.

as far as I can tell, it doesn't affect your social standing, only the number of skill points you get to start with.

It's the three basic levels of fantasy.
First, we have the peasant. He's just an ordinary guy, but he's gonna be great one day. Frodo and the hobbits, Paksenarrion, so on.

Second, we have the hero. He's a legitimate badass, but he'll have to use his head and his teammates if he wants to save the day. Conan, Odysseus, Aragorn...

Third, the demigod. Born legend. He beats up the hydra. He goes down into the labyrinth and wrestles the minotaur into submission. He outruns the bloody SUN in his quest to find immortality. He walks right up to Morgoth and socks him inna FACE. Herakles, Theseus, Gilgamesh, Fingolfin and Isildur.
Most fantasy concerns itself more with the first two types.

The third type is really reserved for mythological...well, demigods. I find it fitting.

I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

Now stop being distracted by the rudeness, quit your accusations of trollery, and start arguing like real men!

Also, the description of the player in legends mode change depending on your difficulty choice.

I like starting as a peasant, makes for more epic tales.

Either way, its just startup difficulty

In the beginning, I always played a peasant, because hey: Doing things the easy way is boring!
But by now I'm coming to terms with my semi-min/maxing nature, and I just pick demigod right away. because if I don't, I spend hours grinding on harmless critters to buff up by skills.  :(

Is this shameful? Honourless? Or simply saving otherwise wasted time?
Are there *certainly* no negative effects on the adventure when one picks the demigod?

You've already proved you can attain the level of skill already. It's not really cheating then. It's just saving time. It's like beating a game on hard the first time, and then playing it again on easy to just have some quick fun.

Also, does this mean that gods in DF actually exist now? Like confirmed to be real entities, to later possibly be used? I never noticed that forces are listed in legends either till now.

there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.
this image relates to the slaying of Utes Gozrusroz

I don't think Toady did anything with religion for this release. The gods are already pretty well-done, in my opinion, what with the art and priests and temples and such. Although I haven't seen actually seen a temple since 31.12.

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

That's the point, it wouldn't be as fun to crush their souls if they didn't have souls to begin with.

"Guided by forces unknown" has been the phrase for pretty much ever, and does refer to us, but you get it with peasant now. Hero says something about destiny and demi-god says of divine parentage.

If you have problems grasping the pure awesomeness that IS a demi-god, think about Chuck Norris. He could crush all 7 hydra hears with a single roundhouse kick. He is the only documented living demi-god in our world.

The entire content consists of senseless murder, a pile of faceless naked women and zero regard for human life in general, all in the service of the protagonist's base impulses. It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

And the single most over-used joke character ever.
