I was always being ambushed by either kobolds, goblins, or other nasty bandits for almost anywhere I went. After the 40th or 50th time they just stopped attacking. I think I may have eliminated the bandit activity in that area or they were just scared of my legendary hammer lord.

I actually just ran into a band, of what seemed like at least 20 kobolds. They killed one peasant, and didn't scratch anybody else. And they all had steel for some reason?

there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.
this image relates to the slaying of Utes Gozrusroz

After a while the kobold ambushes just get tiring. Me and my small army are exploring and every few steps a kobold ambush I lose a soldier in each ambush.  So after 15 or so ambushes just me and my swordsman against 20-25 kobolds.  He takes down about 6 and I am missing a leg and trying to fight off the last 7 or so one gets a lucky hit on me and mortally wounds me by tearing my heart apart.  As I take care of the rest I see the one that wounded me so I throw my sword at him and it gets his heart and stays there while I take my last breath and watch him die. I was so pissed I took care of titans, giants, dragons, demons, and killed 150 kobolds and goblins only to be killed by a lucky shot

That's what I like about Dwarf Fortress. You may be the greatest swordsmen in all the land, but shit happens. One of my best games ended when my legendary swordsmen awoke to a band of angry dwarf bandits. The first attack of there's cut me in half.

I'll give the land a little shock, remember what I say, and they'll yet regret they've sent Jim Jones in chains to Botany Bay."

Yup! My greatest hero so far was pretty godly. A (weak) titan, and 30+ other notable kills under his belt. Countless other kills that his followers probably finished off. Had pretty much single-handedly cleansed the northern lands of bandits.

Killed from an arrow to the back of the head while killing some pidly goblin! I sort of deserve it since I thought I would try to ambush a goblin camp at night.

It was quite poignant, actually. I was returning from a grand adventure into relatively unexplored land where I found and fought the titan. Bumped into the camp by chance on the way back, thought I was indestructable and got my lesson!

He had actually somehow survived a previous arrow to the eye earlier in his adventures, but only suffered heavy bruising :D

One of my adventurers was weak, well compared to the adventurers of old, though i think all adventurers now versions are like that.
Anyway, he had survived MULTIPLE "mortal wounds". and having everybody part in red, and healing.
Managed to kill a few bogymen, which lead to the full red body...
But he was finally taken down by a damn sturgeon... Sturgeons these versions are like the carp of the old versions, even worse...

Hey, one thing, how do you guys train up, cos i can seem to NEVER find any animals willing to help me, and i rarely get ambushed by guys.

Go and kill named bandits and beasts/night creatures. The more XP the target has, the more XP you get from wrestling it.

Yeah I had a similar 'huh?' moment when I was being shot by a kobold despite nobody having spotted me. I'd modded the raws slightly so this was a gold arrow stickign in my head. Maybe next time I'll just mod teh raws so ranged weapons don't exist.

As for training, I try to find savage sounding zones and roam around with ambush mode until I find something. Usually a pack of Rhesus Macaque. If in a desert, there is no ambushing to be done so you better have good speed to catch up to vultures.

I had one adventurer, after about 10 minutes of swimming/ambushing training, who decided to test his new skills on a sturgeon.

I lost another adventurer who had 80+ named kills and several grandmaster skills after 2 goblins ambushed me.

Be careful sleeping in the wild, even with companions. I 'woke up' to a steel bolt smashing through my brain fired by a kobold.

I don't think I've ever seen Kobold's during an adventure. I feel like I'm missing out  :(

Then you are getting harder stuff such as night creatures or bandits or goblins or goblin bandits. Kobolds are easier, in part because they only wear tunics and loinclothes. They do like to compensate through numbers, though, but it's not really that bad.

Kobolds really need to go back to being armed with copper weapons. :/

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.
