In story dungeons other than the sewer, the platforms are safe to rest (If there are no enemies nearby), provided you can find them. And bridges do count as raised platforms.

While I do sometimes get ambushed on platforms, it is about 5% of the times I rest there (And most of that was in the sewer). It is about 80% on the ground. At this point I just carry a pile of Heal True potions.

Found the Broken Vessel and died a few times before hitting on a charm combo that seemed to do okay. Then I tried to take on the...thing in its remains. That was too tough for me, but luckily it can't seem to actually kill me, just kick me out of its weird dream world.

I also decided to take on the Arena. I expected one-on-one fights with tough enemies. I did not expect massive waves of tough enemies.

That game is great. I kept thinking I'd explored it all, only to be proven wrong.
Oh sure, it's great. Pretty tough in some sections, but I can't help but be fascinated by the world and the art. Probably the first Souls-like I've actually enjoyed enough to keep coming back to.

I'm playing with a mod that adds new guards, including a couple types that shoot immediately upon spotting an agent.  One of those guards is about to walk into a room with all 4 of my agents in it.  I used a burst program (+3 AP this turn, -3 AP for 2 turns) and a labyrinth daemon triggered (-2 AP), so all of my agents were pretty much sitting ducks.  If they had default speed they would have 2 AP... I'm escorting a guy with default speed.

All of this is fine because I have an agent with a gun on overwatch watching the door.  Guard comes in and... game crash.  Try again with a different gun.  Crash.  Okay, let's just shoot him on my turn... oh right, modded guard that shoots immediately.  So he walks in, and in the space of maybe 5 seconds cold-heartedly guns down all 3 of my agents leaving only the escort target standing.  It was seriously the most violent thing I've seen in this game.

Death 1:

We're trying to reach an ice mine so that we may loot it for all that it's worth. We find it and begin snooping, not noticing the sensors littered around.

Hey, what's this random blast door in the ground? Hey, something's coming out of it. What is it? Oh. It's a turret. *dead* and comically launched over a hill.

Death 2:

We're exploring the ice mine. We've taken out many turrets. We see another so we shoot it until it stops moving. We wander up and dismantle the remains. *boom*, *dead*. I guess there was a self-destruct hidden within that took out my teammate and I.

Of course, there's a boss that relies on you being able to perfectly time a shield bash as it teleports around. And whose third phase can shield-bash you, then hit you, disarm you, then hit you again to death because lightning both disarms and apparently shortens mercy invulnerability. Not helping is the fact that most of my arsenal is two-handed weapons.

That's the only one that took me more than one try, although several others were close calls.  That one took me like 4 tries if I remember, because the timing of it was so painfully precise.  Very annoying boss fight.

Uh, what exactly do you have to be precise on? I did the camel first and don't remember having much trouble with thunderblight.

I honestly don't remember the details, but I remember generally screwing up the timing like a dozen times despite having the feeling that I knew what I was supposed to do and was attempting that.

If I remember right, the first half wasn't too bad, but the boss changed its pattern partway through and it was a lot harder to hit it safely after that.

I've been meaning to play this again, and clearly need to if I don't remember the details anymore.

To hit the damn thing, you either have to shield-bash or backflip at the correct moment, as with any other normal fight where you'd use these techniques to launch a counterattack. The problem is that right before it attacks in melee, it'll teleport(more of a Flash Step) left and right to throw you off. The second half, as Telgin describes, it also wreathes itself in electricity, so screwing up the counterattack also means it does more damage, disarms you, and leaves you wide open to its follow-up attacks, though the electricity does go away shortly.

I'm also hilariously wrong about Urbosa not being the type to hide behind a shield. The heirloom weapon you get for defeating Thunderblight Ganon is, in fact, a scimitar and shield. Guess she was as bad at counter-attacks as I am.

I think the timing on a perfect dodge is easier than the timing on a shield parry. Dunno, I never really used the parry for melee attacks, it's more helpful for dealing with projectiles. Killing guardians with s pot lid!

Either way it's probably safer to try for dodges. Dodge too soon and well, you physically got out of the way even if it doesnt make an opening. If you parry too soon Link is stuck standing there like an idiot for a good half second, long enough to take a spear to his unprotected face. And if you have a shield up and try to dodge too late you're covered too.

TL;DR the shield bash is risky and mostly useless except for reflecting projectiles and styling on mooks. Use the backflip and side hops more, they would be good moves even without Iframes and flurry rush.

I have the skill and speed to hit most things twice, often in the eyes, each round.  And leather armor.  And I'm still dying to freakin geckos and wild dogs!!  Much less actual armed humans, who just laugh and shoot me dead.
I can sneak, and that *is* helpful, but that first round still ends with me next to 8-1 rats, or an annoyed guy with an SMG, or scorpion with no eyes who's still gonna poison me.

Okay okay, I just used sneak to steal a bunch of stuff *and* complete a quest.  Mmm, quest-XP, this game is great.  Clear a farm of some mole-rats?  Sure-

oh my hireling ran up to a rat then bugged out, taking no actions.  I can't hit it because it's surrounded by him and some corn.

Now I remember how I beat this game as a kid *quickload*  (No but really, a permadeath run of this would be insane with how the crits work, and how many swarms of enemies there are)

I accepted a quest to walk a guy across town at night. Fair enough, shouldn't be too bad.

Then I remembered that nothing in this game looks like anything and NPCs won't mark your map for you like in Daggerfall. You can't even see if a building has a likely-looking sign, because the draw distance is tiny and bumping it any higher than default kills the framerate.

Finally, after wandering around for what felt like hours, I clicked on the wrong (locked) door and a guard instantly decided to HALT "Stop, thief!" me.

Yeah nah brah, melee is pretty toasted in FO2. Even FO1 was better thanks to some buggy interactions and Slayer being available at level 18 instead of 24.

...oh, you don't actually have enough strength for Slayer, even. Welp. I guess there's the +1 operation later on, or burning a perk slot, and I think you can also cheese it with power armor.

And if I remember correctly, Endurance doesn't really make enough of a difference in FO2 to be pumped up particularly high. It's really only used for, well... Sex.

But yeah, Small Arms are king in FO2.
