You know those videos cool people make where they kill lots of people with throwing knives and shit? That's not me.

You see (Ivan), when it's dark and I have my headlamp off (Having it on would likely not be an effective stealth tactic) I can't seem to see anything that isn't a human wearing a headlamp... And so I do things like walk into traps.

Sometimes I'll accidentially wind up using the Military-Grade Bullets (which are the game's currency) instead of the "Dirty" bullets that are much more common and aren't essentially money.

I can't seem to use the shotguns effectively. Either I hit but I'm too far away to visibly inflict much damage, or I miss entirely.

I've only triggered a few traps so far, and thankfully only one has killed me.

The game is wonderful - but I'm not exactly the best at seeing things in the dark through a monitor, and I'm hardly the best shooter gamer ever.

this isn't so much a how'd i die/fail so much as a touch of background storytelling and mechanics producing a very tragic story.

unlike normally, i'll reveal the game here; it was XCOM 2 with all available dlc. playing on ironman hard, so no save scumming.

in this game, im trying to keep my recruits alive but i'll at least lose 1 every other mission or so. but from this violent sifter i ended up with 11 hardcore recruits that i believe will bring me to the end game. i started with most of these guys and they saw all their peers die around them as they hardened into a team of elites. so far we've liberated 2 areas; africa and europe, all due to these dudes and their redshirt cohorts.
at the heart of these elites, however, is a pair i fondly call "the couple". one is this american guy who ended up a specialist. i don't know how tho unless the RNG hates his ass; this guy kicks names and takes ass. i loaded him up with all the medic and overwatch bonuses and he's the rock the rest of the squad is based around.
his counterpart is a french woman who became a ranger. after she wiffed a melee attack on a sectoid that she narrowly survived early on, i said never again and put her skills into things that made her tankier and gave her the strongest shotguns i can. she's racking up kills by being flexible and finishing off what the specialist can't.

these two have been with me from the very beginning as rookies. i don't think ive taken a mission without them, both of them.
but during my latest mission to claim a vip all kinds of shit went loose. not only did the viper king show up but a hardcore spawn of baddies seperate us from the evac zone. pinned between a wall of dudes separating us from safety, a super raidboss snake running around, and waves of regulars pouring in it fucking sucked. i put the specialist on top of the nearest covered area so he could put his overwatch skills to use, clearing out the reinforcements and stuff. the ranger cleared a path through some cars to the evac zone. of course tho, that fucking snake got a turn for every turn we did, so i had constantly fire at him with my one guy with status rounds but after some damage it ran way. in its place tho, it bought enough time for a huge wave of regular advent to catch up to where we were. the specialist mowed a ton down but was fatefully brought down by mass chip damage as he was seperated from the squad and finally perished only 5 tiles away from the evac when he triggered 3 separate overwatches.

the mission screen congratulated me for a successful mission but it felt so Pyrrhic. i went to the memorial and saw him. countless killed, finally kia by a advent officer. the worst part? this was 4 missions ago and i always visit just to check. and the ranger was mourning at his memorial every time i visited. just, holy shit, the headcanon for this made me tear up.

This is less a how did I die and more of a hey maybe I'm going to catch fire shortly sort of thing. So if you don't hear from me again, it's relevant!

Anyway I want to use the broiler setting on my toaster oven but I am uncertain as to how much heat it throws out underneath. According to the internet, anything safe to put your toaster oven on in general is safe for the broiler setting. But I have it sitting on top of my minifridge. I'm less certain about broiling on top of that than I am for say, a countertop.

So I looked it up further and folks recommend a baking sheet, like what one might put a turkey in. So I got one of those that fits the toaster oven entire and put some pot holders underneath of that to further diffuse the heat.

Time for science. If I catch fire it's because I called my friends the Nuclear Engineer, the Master Chemist, and the Appliance Repair Mechanic to ask about heat safety. None of them picked up so this is on them.
