When i mean early, i mostly meant much earlier than in my previous game that ended with xcom being disbanded after only half a year.

It didn't took much missions actually to get some colonel ranks, i don't know if it's related to some openxcom or the extended mod change, but they level up in rank rather fast.
Anyways, no more colonels now :D and for some reason despite my main base is in the USA, the USA decided to submit to their new alien overlords and cut their founding , leading an alien base to "popup" in the same time in that country.

Going to have some fun with the blaster launchers to clear that base.

I am pretty sure the rank is related to the number of soldiers at hand. They need one mission to advance a rank, but if you recruited a lot of soldiers right away you would get a max rank one after a few missions. (I think you need 60 for a General? But I might be wrong.)
Do you play with the regular openxcom.exe? Because the extended (or even extended plus) have some really neat features. Some are just QoL (middle click on an enemy to see what he's packing, save soldier and Skyranger inventory, ...), others are probably only used in mods, like being able to punch with an empty hand. I love that last one in XPiratez.

I like punching people too, but that’s gotten my gals hurt or even killed on a number of occasions.(

My own death:

Just as I was leaving a ship that would be captured in less than a second, I accidentally docked with it again.

I didn't realize what had happened until it was already too late.

True to the cliche, I was thinking of retiring that character, too...

I'm using the extended plus mod, as the following sounded good.
Now for the ranking up, i believe after playing that it's much faster than when i was playing the normal version of xcom (the dos one) .

In fact i feel that openxcom (or is it extended plus that does it? ) has the aliens being oddly hyperactive in the geoscape , meaning they send a lot more ufo that i either force to crash, or land, or even a lot more regular terror mission than what i remember from the dos version.

It may explain why my squaddies rank up that fast, because they're simply having a lot more battles than before in a month of game time than they had in the dos era.
I don't seem to find anything about this, so it could be my old memory that is blurry, but still i don't remember my troops ranking up that fast in the past, or those waves of ufo being that relentless.

We were filing back to the car after a successful raid, everything having gone rather smoothly. We'd looted a good amount of medical supplies, which would go a long way towards healing the wounded amongst us. As we got the car started I gave a few blasts on the horn so as to drum up a decent crowd of zombies to plow through, as is my habit. I floored it, we clipped one zombie and then another and then suddenly the car smashes hood-first into the street, the engine block exploding into flames accompanied by the sound of death.
I just froze in shock for a moment. I thought the entire party had died! Then, though, a couple of them managed to pry themselves free of the wreckage as the zombies came shambling in to descend on it - but the leader of the group, who'd made it all the way from the start of the journey without faltering, was left a red smear on the asphalt, along with the dog he'd picked up somewhere along the way.

Fukken brutal. I didn't realise this game could still surprise me! :o

Huh, I just picked that up again yesterday, myself!

Made it to #2. Final firefight was in Mountain Town. First kill I was trying to camouflage myself on a billboard(I had armor and helmet with similar colors), only for a guy to try and pistol-snipe me. Only, I had a Winchester with an 8x scope. Next kill, I dropped someone in a house with my M2 BMG. Third kill was the same, only the guy had a banana suit. This left only one other enemy.

As the walls were closing in for the finale(I was literally glitched through a house wall by them), I charged at the other guy, firing my machine gun. Sadly, his aim was better.

I know its not, but from that name I really wanted that to be a battle royal game with the Totally Accurate Battle Simulator engine.  So basically you're running around as a floppy physics person trying to kill people and collect loot (this is the same engine used by Stick Fight).  They could have it so there's no parachute or fall damage, so you fall from the sky then floppily bounce around the world with limited air control until you finally come to a stop.

Somewhere around day 60 I was reviewing my map and decided that a shock tower I'd found and activated a while ago wasn't going to get more zombie action and wasn't in a very ideal defense spot. It was on the upper edge of my western defenses and had a lot of wall space and shoreline in between it and the edge. I also needed some more power for other projects, so I dismantled it.

A few days later my main combat force was out trying to remove a doomed village when the warned popped up saying that the next attack was imminent and coming from the West. About as far a walk as they were likely to get, and with basically no chance for them to get there in time.  Oh, and I'd just spent all my money researching Titans (I had gotten a Mayor with +50% damage buff for them). So no soliders and no money to really beef up the defenses in that area. But I had a few solid lines of towers and Executors there, so I figured I might be fine.

It was not fine. The zombies poured in the area. They bashed up against the walls and there were so many of them that they flowed all the way up to that spot where the Shock Tower used to be. And, as I discovered to my horror, that was not as secure a spot as I thought. It was right in the direct line path the zombies wanted to take to get to my Command Center. The towers nearby did what they could, but the zombies broke through. And then though the next few sets of walls, which I had kept neglecting to upgrade to stone because they were behind stronger fortifications. I'd intended to do so before the final waves, but those were about 20+ days out.

Try as I might as income came in, I couldn't stem the flood. My main defenses on the West held a long time, but that one weakpoint was all they needed, especially as that part of the wave was mostly the big fat zombies since they were slow and just flowed along the back of the swarm. By the time my soldiers got back the zombies were at the command center and it was to late.

I can only assume that if I'd kept that shock tower that we'd have held out long enough for my soldiers to get back in time to make a difference.

120% difficulty is hard, especially when you don't play the game often enough to actually be good at it. Ah, well, live and learn.

Stupid blood vomiting statues hurt if the zombies corner you. I had 2 teleport potions, too, but random was not my friend here.
