Running from the Wargoyle, have to smash stuff in the way, but the enemies in the area have a higher priority for lock-on. And Wargoyle's fireballs hit for half my health. Also how the hell can this thing hit me inside an enclosed building.

This game cheats a lot. Whether it's a puppet using a powerful move several levels before it learns it naturally or a different puppet using a move that, according to the wiki, it can't learn at all, I'm constantly getting smacked down by moves that are completely impossible to predict and seem tailor-made to counter my team. The odd type system that's just different enough from vanilla to screw me over constantly doesn't help.

Fun death:  Getting overconfident and walking into an ambush instead of scouting or using sensors.  Chewed apart by crossfire while trying to flee.

Less fun 1000 deaths:  Losing a unit to grenade-spamming aliens with no line of sight, "aiming" over cover by smell or heartbeat.

Really crap deaths:  Tiny, fast, nimble, stealthy little balls which are practically immune to most weapons even in the midgame.  They have an area of effect melee which always one-hits my psionic characters and looks really dumb.

I hate those Alchemists. Rollers die to warp(?) cannon very quick though and I think they are supposed to be weak against laser fire. Always just shredded them with heavy ammo from anyone and everyone. Drones with 4 miniguns are fun.

My Wing-Diver friend downed on the other side of a wall of Hectors (giant robots), I called in a tank and made a valiant charge straight through them...

... and got mowed down by machine gun fire faster than the stupid commentator guy could say "shield screen."

I think you mean fire damage, which I haven't unlocked yet.  I think I have beastman flame rounds, and I definitely have acid which I've heard works.  But I can't use any of those weapons yet (looking forward to unlocking these fricken grenade launchers...)

Lasers are particularly ineffectual though, which was frustrating since I was relying on them entirely ):
The basic projectile guns work alright I guess, I just arbitrarily prefer lasers in games like this.  Probably due to OldCOM 1.  And Laser Squad Nemesis.  And lasers.  lasers lasers lasers~

The laser cannon isn't bad, and is better vs mechs than most other weapons. I have generally just brute forced rollers with anything. Even swords. If fire is good against them then the plasma cannons matriarchs carry will be good as they deal fire damage.
Personally I find matriarchs more problematic than rollers, they are harder to hit and fast and carry more exotic weapons than their lesser minions.

Mine recent defeat:

I start a new game, I colonize a "nearby" system(all the nearest stars are about a couple dozen AU away). I queue up some hauler ships to start supplying it with materials. Before they're even built, pirates attack the colonized system. I wait until they leave, then send in the haulers. They hadn't even arrived by the time pirates attack again. Then just before the last pirate ship from that raid leaves, another pirate raid shows up. Then another.

Since my economy was already stretched to the breaking point, I was already far behind the other empires, and decided to just give up.

EDIT: Next attempt. For some reason my capital decided to stop exporting food, and as a result all three of my other colonies starved to death.

Morrowind. Started as mage (more or less), gone to whatever-village-you-get-to-when-you-take-left-road, and there are nothing interesting. "Fasttravelled" from here to other village, then from here to Huul(?), then noticed that there are a guy that can ferry me to Solstheim.
On Solstheim i discovered:
1. Almost every monster here always kills me in 1v1 fight.
2. To proceed in first imperial cult quest i need to unlock 50 level lock on door. My character struggles to open 10 level by this point.
3. Swearing-a-lot for no reason at guy that can ferry me back was really bad idea. Now he doesn't want to take me back, and i don't have nearly enough money to bribe him.
4. Estimated time of swimming back without fast travel is from 40 to 60 minutes in real time.  ::)
Damn. I hope "come for more quests later" didn't mean "come when you done some others". And that i will be able to get back from this meadhall in the middle of bear-infested nowhere in reasonable amount of save-loads.

Solstheim in a nutshell, for new players:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's definitely something you don't want to challenge until you have a few levels under your belt, as it assumes you're already well into the game.  Early game, if I recall, the Fighters' Guild and Mages' Guild are pointed out to you as viable options if you take the right dialog choices with Cosades, and the Thieves' Guild also exists.  I'm not sure specific quest requires unlocking a heavy-duty door, though; my memory fails me on that respect.  I'm guessing the quest where you have to retrieve a limeware bowl; is that correct?  If you want to pick up kudos with the Imperial Cult and don't want to do that yet, you can try another quest-giver.  Poking about, it looks like Lay Healer Synnolian Tunifus in Ebonheart's Imperial Chapel should have relatively easy tasks: wander about and fetch various potion ingredients.  Iulus Truptor, in the same location, likes to send you out to hit up folks for donations - not literally, if you please, as he prefers a silver tongue to an iron sword.

No, absolutely optional quest about lost priestess  ::). I get confused, and for some reason thought that quests from west-ind company guy and priests (cult, yeah) is main ones, and missed main quest itself whatsoever.

Yeah, i know that i was supposed to do guild quests first, but since i already did this many-many times and got bored each time(i don't even know what try to play Morrowind it is), i decided to explore for a bit.  :D
