That's why we do it.

Theory:
Caring for a cat eases a guilty conscience.  Because, whatever you did... a cat would do worse, given even the slightest opportunity.

Granted, since it's VR, that doesn't count on my stats, but that was a very asshole move, and shit like that is largely why I never fly in combat.

Seriously though, not even mad. Sans is a fucking BADASS character once you actually get to see what the deal is with him. If you're like me, you played through the game normally the first time, and then tried for the "true" ending. That whole time, Sans and his brother seemed to be simple comic relief (really good comic relief, at that) but it turns out that the reason Sans is actually so lazy is because he knew the whole time that you could SAVE and simply couldn't bring himself to do anything since he knew it would be undone as soon as you reset your SAVE and he would never even know he did it. However, if you begin playing the game in Asshole Mode and start indiscriminately killing everyone, sans doesn't even bother trying to judge you at the end, and refuses to let you past the final corridor since he knows that letting you through would lead to the end of all life. He then fights you, knowing that you're essentially uneatable due to the fact that you can simply LOAD to travel back to the beginning of the fight whenever you lose, so every time you do, he taunts you since he can tell simply from your expression that you just got utterly destroyed by another version of him. And then he destroys you again.

On a side note, I feel awful about doing the genocide route, especially after getting the true pacifist ending where everything ended up happy and nobody died. It feels awfully shitty to achieve an ending which was so sweet that it literally made me cry, then erase it against the wishes of FLOWEY of all people, and change it to a timeline where Frisk is an omnicidal serial murderer who kills everyone because I was bored. The changes in the events and dialog of the game are also incredibly disturbing, for example, when you meet the snowman who normally asks you to take a piece of him and bring it somewhere nice, Frisk instead takes the piece before he is even asked, and continues to take pieces off until the snowman is reduced to a small pile. Upon inspecting it, the game states "It's just a worthless pile of snow". That's... dark. Long story short, I feel like I'm playing a creepypasta version of the normal route.

Like I said before, I feel awful about doing this run, especially now that I'm tasked with killing Boner the Invincible, but I want to keep going because I still don't understand a lot of shit about the plot. It's obvious that the person who you're naming at the beginning is the human Asriel found and Frisk is a seperate person, but what the hell is the significance of this? Also, if so, then why does Frisk insist from the very beginning that his name is the same as that of the other human (whom he has never met) and only ever reveal otherwise when he meets Asriel during the true ending? Also, why is Asriel the only one who cares that he does this?

Frisk doesn't insist on anything. In fact, no one ever asks him* his name or refers to him as the first fallen human EXCEPT for Flowey. With Sans it's always something like Kid or Buddo, with Papyrus it's always Human, with Toriel it's 'my child', etc. Only Asriel calls you Chara**, and he's also the only one who asks Frisk his name... which is why everyone knows it except for Napstablook after the Pacifist Ending, because everyone learned it at the same time he did (Napstablook was the only monster in the underground not absorbed by Asriel since he just closed his blinds and went to bed or something when everyone else came to Frisk's rescue).

*I understand Frisk as a name and character is gender-neutral, 'he' is just the classic pronoun

Got to the Enclave Oil Rig. Entire party decked out in the finest gear available in the wasteland. I entered the front door, sauntered up to the computer whereupon I discovered it is not the computer that prevents everyone from shooting at me but just a normal computer. I reloaded the save and checked again. Again it's an ordinary background computer. Reloaded the save before that, a full hour before I embarked upon the expedition. Still just an ordinary background computer. It bugged out on me and now I have to kill everyone on the Oil Rig in what I can only describe as a blood-soaked, slow slog through the facilities. And oh boy do I die. A lot. Repeatedly.

There was a murder hologram in the room just down the hall, so I decided to investigate a different room. What I didn't realize is that the two rooms were connected. I ended up running straight into the murder hologram, which is stronger than the other murder holograms throughout the DLC thus far.

I'm glad to be about done with this DLC, it's been pretty frustrating to play throughout.

Apparently the traps, radios and speakers were supposed to be "environmental puzzles". They're not. You know in adventure games, how you're utterly fucked and can't progress unless you find the one-pixel-item on the ground? That's Dead Money's speakers, except it's every ten steps. It's not a puzzle, you just have to run around and look for the speaker, or the terminal that shuts off the shielded speakers, savescumming if you die.

The "shielded speakers" are a really forced, hamfisted way of forcing you to solve puzzles the way the developers wanted. For one thing, the idea is stupid. Second, if Sinclair was an insane perfectionist about the Sierra Madre, why wouldn't he use shielded speakers everywhere? Moreover, why wouldn't he shield the hologram projectors? The holograms are a joke too, considering that there's plenty of holograms with no emitters nearby, even though terminals are constantly telling you that you can get rid of them by destroying the emitter. Often in the same terminal that lets you shut off the magic emitter-less holograms, no less!

That's my beef with Dead Money's gameplay; the difficulty and survival aspects don't arise naturally from a lack of equipment, they come from nonsensical design decisions and outright removing gameplay options (the Cloud covering alternate routes, missing emitters, shielded speakers). Besides, for most of the DLC you'll have enough of the otherwise-useless Sierra Madre tokens to just buy 50 (misc. food item) whenever you would normally use a Stimpak.

The story isn't bad per se, it's just that I guessed a lot of the next two hours or so after I rescued Dog. I actually thought the story would be Dead Money's saving grace, but it beats you over the head with OLD WORLD = BAD and YOUR COMPANIONS DON'T LIKE YOU. It's like KOTOR 2, in one-thirtieth of the time and with all the questionably-good parts removed. I haven't actually beaten it yet so maybe the final twist will blow me away and I'll eat my words, but I kinda doubt it.

Dead Money is easily the worst NV DLC for exactly the reasons you described. I played through it once and I'm never playing through it again.

BTW, if you happen to need to carry lots of very heavy things at the end, apparently you can run with parts of corpses like heads even if they're full.

After gloriously defeating the two tutorial battles with only minor casualties, my newly minted mercenary company was ready to venture out into the wide world. Since there didn't appear to be any contracts available at my starting city, we headed down the road towards the next (bigger) town. Along the way, we ran into two bandits, who took one look at our eight-strong company and immediately turned tail and ran.

We gave chase, but didn't seem to be making any headway in catching the bandits. We were about to break off pursuit when the bandits were suddenly ambushed by a pack of orcs. The bandits were instantly annihilated, and the orcs turned their attention towards us. We decided that the bandits had had a good idea, and started fleeing. As we neared a town, the local militia saw our plight and sortied in our defense. Battle was joined, at which point the orcs rapidly dismembered the combined militia/mercenary forces.

Thus ended the story of my newly minted mercenary company.

I thought you were going to spoil the plot for me, so I was reluctant to click on this, but it looks like you're just explaining my stoopids to me, so that's good.

About the name thing, I... didn't notice that. I could have sworn Toriel and a couple other people called Frisk by the name you gave them at some point. Must have just been me. And yeah, I realize that's how everyone found out his real name, it just seemed weird since it seemed like he had told everyone his name was Chara as you say and then at the end decided "just kidding, the name's Frisk boi" and everyone went along with it, except that wasn't actually what happened, I was just being dumb.

Also, Frisk is a weird name.

Nah, I wouldn't do that to someone. Or at least, I'd try not to; golden rule and all that. And yeah, the name thing is pretty subtle. You wouldn't notice it on the first time through, but when you go back looking for it, it's pretty clever. Sort of like Fight Club or Sixth Sense in that respect. Anyway, good luck with Sansyboy, it took me a number of hours to beat him myself. If it helps, you could write down his attacks; they're always in the same order iirc so you can git gud that way, maybe plan out when you can heal and so forth.

Yeah, I noticed that his attacks are always the same, so naturally every time I fight him I get a little bit better at it. Getting destroyed in <10 seconds by his surprise opening attack was hugely discouraging the first time I fought him, but due to memorizing his attacks I seem to have progressed somewhat.

However, as I go on his attacks become increasingly difficult to avoid even with memorization, and it doesn't help that he plays like an asshole, like how he pokes your cursor with bones on the menu since he apparently can't wait his turn, or how he tricks you into thinking he's proposing a truce and then kills you dunks on you while you're trying to Spare him. On the other hand, I just realized that's also pretty epic, since that's exactly how you kill Papyrus when you're doing genocide. When I look at it that way, I probably should have expected him to do that. Hindsight is 20/20.

Still an insanely fun fight. I'll beat him eventually. And then I'll feel bad about it.
