I assume whoever thought the Tomb of the Giants would be a challenging yet fun area was drunk at the time.

As a half-ogre swordmaster I found a room full of swords!  They were arranged a bit oddly but... swords!  What luck!

Yeah they were mimics.

As long as you have a light source it is! It has a good art direction, the enemy encounters are well-designed, and the exploration is reasonably fun. At least its better than crystal cave, lost Izalith, and unflooded New Londo.

The best part about the Tomb of the Giants is that you can get all the way to the boss from the warp bonfire while only fighting like two enemies. The skellies are annoying, true, but you only have to deal with a very few of them once you've looted everything once. I much prefer it to some of the things the other Lord Soul areas make you suffer through. If you can't deal with the darkness, try getting another Lord Soul or two first. You'll almost certainly be better prepared then.

The thing is, the Skull Lantern has so many limitations it's near useless in a dangerous situation. Combine that with the fact that you can't dodge safely in many of the areas...

I keep being killed by Skeleton Beasts because I can't dodge them (narrow cliffsides), I can't shield tank them (they have an attack which for various reasons appears to be unblockable, and they have a combo attack that breaks my guard anyway), and just taking the hits obviously isn't an option. For additional great fun, if they step back while you don't have the lantern up, you lose lock on and anyway to track them without exposing yourself to a hitstun combo that can do things including killing you outright or pushing you off the cliff.

I'm partly just tilted for various reasons anyway, but. The area hard counters my build and playstyle, which revolves around dodging, parrying, and very little ability to actually straight-up tank.

I just tested and you can avoid all enemies except one Skelebeast and one Giant Skeleton Warrior, at least until the area you need the Lordvessel to unlock. All the enemies in this area have very very short "leashes", which means you can often walk AROUND them without aggroing them, if you do it cautiously. You can also consistently kill a Skelebeast with Pyromancy[Great Fireball with +10 Flame] followed by 1-2 strong attacks, even with a weak weapon. And there ARE other light sources besides the Skull Lantern. Mind you, Skull Lantern is good enough for the small amount of enemies you have to face past the warp point, but there are better alternatives if you're clearing the area[Because there ARE lots of nice big souls lying around].

Fair enough on the avoidance.

As for the other lights, they are a) Cast Light, which requires 14 int, and b) the Sunlight Maggot, which is a Lost Izalith item. :P

Not quite a death, but close.  Two light cruisers met off the coast of Formosa during the Third Sino-Japanese war.  The Japanese ship Kasagi, again, had the displacement and gun caliber advantage, but this time the Chinese ship Shenzen had the gun quality advantage.  The two ended up pounding each other into wreckage at point-blank range after shooting each others' engines out.  The Shenzen won, barely, and limped away at 8 knots, but given its age and damage, I'd call it a constructive loss if I didn't need every hull I could get.

Sunlight Maggot is my go-to. Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith is unpleasant, but in more of a "Bathing in raw sewage" kind of way instead of a "Dying every ten feet" kind of way. Its the shittiest area in the game, but its not THAT difficult.

It's not so much a game-ending death as the death of one of my companions.

My companion and I found a dog and lured it in with some of our food. Fast forward through a few adventures, we're just driving along when we start smelling sulfur and rotten meat. The dog vanishes in a flash of light, only to be replaced with a demon who asks us if we have any pizza. The only option we're provided with is "freak out", which we do. This causes the demon to freak out a bit as well. After his own freak out, he puffs back into our dog and promptly explodes into bits.

I may have made a costly strategic error by upgrading over half of my tanks to Tigers, this was expensive, and they are expensive to maintain, meaning my prestige dropped by a massive 20000 in two missions.

Made myself a little basecamp to survive. Just put a roof over my head. There was a scorpion nearby that repeatedly visited but couldn't seem to path through the trees. I managed to craft a few spears and went on the offensive. Better safe than sorry, you know? Killed the scorpion no problem. Figured I'd better clean up the corpse before another predator comes along. Lo and behold, as soon as axe strikes chitin a sabertooth bounds over the rocks and mauls me to death. Barely got a chance to stab it, and that didn't do shit.

I can't get anywhere near my stuff now, because this cat won't get lost.

God damn it. That sounded like it would've made for a weird but awesome game.
