FTL is just ridiculous sometimes. I enter like the third node from the start. "The enemy is a ZOMG1337HAX0Я! He has haxxed your shield systems! You have no shields! BTW he has a heat ray drone, your weapons and oxygen facilities are on fire, yo."

Don't get me wrong, I love it when daddy FTL hurts me. I just... urgh. Third. Node.

FTL: Faster Than Light

I've noticed FTL seems to be pretty tame (with shit luck screwing me over rarely) until you get to the Flagship, and then it's like a teenager fistfighting an infant with a knife. Maybe the infant gets a few good slashes in, but almost invariably they get their face punched in.

Well, giant ones are even worse.

Especially since they can move at the same pace as (and sometimes faster than) the player.

Joy. Not to mention even thinking of giant spiders spooks me a little.

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. One of the characters I made soon after is doing pretty well, having stolen from several FEMA camps and having taken a nail gun. He's pretty injured, though.

Poisonous, dodgey critters need to be shot or set on fire.  Webs are incredibly flamable.

Nebulas are a-okay... My only problem is when 90% of my crew is Engi, and then a bunch of Mantis boarders teleport into my weapon bay. That's the reason why blast doors are high on my upgrade priority list. Making the spindly little fucks eat vacuum is immensely satisfying.

I love the game, but it does have a last-minute difficulty wall when it comes to the boss.  Which is no problem after a few runs, but that first run?  You'll probably make it to the flagship, but lol you're not winning.

The game is designed around preparing for that fight you know is coming.  There are multiple options...  You don't technically need cloak, or evade, though having one or the other helps a lot...  But it's not a game to pick up and beat on the first try.  On the first try, you die.  On the second try, you probably meet the flagship and die.

And that's why I don't mind that people call it a roguelike, as overused as that term is.

Actually, I just forgot I had a lighter in that case and was confused by what I'd walked into.

My strategy to deal with a lack of sensors:

Vent the ship except areas with Crew and the Oxygen system. Maybe move one there so it doesn't get destroyed so easily. Fires no longer a problem, and to an extent neither are boarders.

But yeah, unless I'm low on health and the other area is a hostile sector, I avoid nebulas.

I have godawful luck in FTL. If I had a nickle for every time I got smashed with a heavy missile while cloaked at 90% evade, I'd have at least a couple of dollars by now.
