It gets worse. After a certain number of turns (20, I believe), the aliens automatically know where all of your soldiers are and can psi them.

I believe though that aliens tend to target the soldier with the lowest... courage? At least that's what I remember happening during one let's play I watched.

No, I think Psi Defence is a completely separate stat from Bravery.

A bunch of white worm masses bred explosively and filled a room. I had to go through that room to get anywhere. I died from excessive poisoning due to the zerg rush of white worm masses. I just started the game. classic unfair roguelike death.

Decided to take on Duke Fishron. I can beat Plantera, the second hardest boss in the game, pretty easily, plus I have vampire knives, one of the best melee weapons. It shouldn't be a challenge.. right?

Turns out, the AI can lock down every vehicle in your attack force at the same time. The enemy quickly picked apart my attack force, then descended upon my base.

Starcraft. And I thought "Archimonde's Ascent" from Warcraft III was hard

Rule number 1 of playing Warcraft/Starcraft is that you do not try to overwhelm the AI. It is impossible.

I didn't even try to overwhelm them. It was just 12 marines, 4 siege tanks, 5 wraiths and a science vessel. That combination tends to at least gain some ground before I have to rebuild it all.

I have the feeling that you're not actually "supposed" to take the white Confederate base in this mission, and just head straight for the Ion Cannon (this is still "The Hammer Falls" BTW). Or else I just suck at Starcraft, which is already a confirmed fact.
